Background Giles McKenzie is a workhorse, born to a family of workhorses. Blue-collar to the core, McKenzie can trace his genealogy for a dozen generations through miners, teamsters, factory workers, farmers, sailors, and construction laborers. Duty and quiet fortitude were expected of him from an early age, and he embraced those ideals wholeheartedly.

On top of that, however, he possessed a creativity and a drive to excel that went beyond the roots of his family. His application to Starfleet came as a bit of a surprise to his dutiful but unimaginative kin, though they quickly rallied 'round in support and celebrated his acceptance.

Applying the tenacity of his heritage, McKenzie did well in the academy. He missed top-of-class honors by only a slim margin, attributable more to his human reflexes (naturally microseconds slower than those of other races) than to any lack of preparation or study. Naturally, his family supported him regardless, and his conspiracy-theorist uncle Reginald began regular dinner rants about speciesist policies in the Flight Control strand. His Academy marks qualified him for a coveted Command School slot, and he was one of the select group referred to in Academy slang as "golden boys," for being allowed into Command School right after graduation, rather than returning after a few years of service.

He was placed in a Flight position aboard the Budapest, a smaller Norway-class vessel after completion of Command School. Here he excelled not for flash, but for the dependability and the quiet fortitude that were his nature. Promotion came quickly.

His skill and attention to duty marked him for additional responsibility. With a Commendation from his former captain in hand, McKenzie was transferred to serve as Chief of Helm aboard the shakedown cruise of the USS Sulu in 2379, where he has served ever since.

Personality Profile McKenzie is a classic working-man. He pays strict attention to his duty and the details thereof, and is still willing to cut loose and howl at the moon in his off time. He is well-liked both by those he serves and by those who serve with him. Rewards do not matter a whit to him. He derives the most satisfaction from a job well done.

Ever polite, he looks people in the eye, is probably more honest than he needs to be, and tries always to seek a path of moderation rather than conflict. He writes his family with clockwork regularity.

Physical Description Cut like a thoroughbred, McKenzie is in excellent physical shape. He carries himself with a militaristic bearing, straight and proud. He belonged to the Academy Fencing club, and was considered the best defender during his years there.
Special Notes As he has spent years in Starfleet away from Earth, the vast majority of McKenzie's Scottish brogue has faded from his speech. He still uses the occasional piece of Scots slang, and abbreviates words every now and then when he must speak quickly, but otherwise speaks clear and fluent Standard.
