Background Viraj was born to only Sahana and Murgesh, a fairly unusual situation on Delta IV, since most romantic marriages involved four equal parties (typically two males and two females). He was born two months prematurely aboard the shuttlecraft Snabb, while his parents were visiting the moons of Delta VI, and his mother gave birth to him so rapidly that the labour was over before they were able to impulse within transporter range of Delta IV.

As an infant, Viraj's home life only became more atypical when his parents divorced after his father struck his mother during an argument. This was virtually a worldwide scandal, since Deltan customs would prefer a lethal phaser blast to a light hand-on-skin slap, and would rather partners openly cheat instead of divorcing. With domestic abuse so unheard of on Delta IV, there were no laws to deal with such things, and Viraj's father simply moved to another continent. Like everything else in life, Viraj and his family's time in the worldwide news spotlight faded.

Viraj was fairly unmotivated as a child and adolescent. He achieved moderate success throughout his education, without excelling or failing in any particular subjects. While the combination of moderate successes added up to quite a special achievement, the lack of specific challenges or aptitudes left him without directional momentum in his educational career. Similarly, he remained very active in regional recreational sports, solidly assisting his teams without winning any individual awards. Viraj was constantly told that he had the potential to do anything with his life, and yet he remained fecund, with nothing in particular to apply his potential to.

Unlike his parents, Viraj was betrothed to two girls and a boy, who were all his age, shortly after his parents' divorce, in his mother's attempt to provide him with a normal life. He spent his entire childhood and adolescence getting to know Shyam, Chandi, and Naina, and has grown affectionate with each of them equally. Together, as young adults, they decided to separate until they each reached the age of paripakva (approximately thirty Terran years). They agreed that spending time apart (approximately a Terran decade) would allow them all to further grow uniquely as individuals, and would later bring valuable varied life experience back to their shared relationship.

Chandi was already enrolled in a long-term dance school on Delta IV, at the time of their decision. Shyam had always shown a strong predilection for the culinary arts, and when he decided to work at a restaurant on Delta IV, Viraj decided that the most diverse thing to do would be to find his destiny in space. While Naina joined the crew of an independent interstellar transport ship, the most obvious off-planet choice in Viraj's mind was Starfleet.

After failing the admission exam three times, Viraj was finally accepted to Starfleet Academy. Starfleet provided an unfaltering sense of structure and goal-orientation that Viraj so greatly desired for his life, as his own desires were still unclear. The Academy did not crystallise his life's direction upon entrance, though. Viraj spent his first year learning about all of the disciplines possible for him, and, based on his holoscenarios and exam scores, he showed promise in each of the fields. It wasn't until the beginning of second year, when an Operations professor offhandedly commented on what a fine Ops Officer Viraj would make, that Viraj decided on Operations as the division for him.

Upon further consideration, Viraj realised that Ops truly was an ideal position for him. He certainly enjoyed the chance to personally work with the crew, but he preferred having much of that interaction being through the use of starship technology. Viraj knew in advance that there would be a vast difference between appropriate social behaviour in Deltan society and appropriate social behaviour in Federation society. He knew that physical and sexual contact that he would interpret as a gesture of hello, could easily be interpreted as sexual assault. For fear of being improper, Viraj arranged to always have Vulcan roommates, since they mate so infrequently, during his stay at Starfleet Academy. For his first two years, he didn't socialize at all outside of his classes, and for the second two years, his socialization was fairly infrequent and usually impersonal. As a result, he didn't form any strong friendships in his time at the Academy.

When he graduated from Starfleet Academy, his family and friends as well as complete strangers were able to watch the graduation ceremony from the comfort of their own homes on Delta IV. A major planetwide news organisation broadcasted it to showcase a story of hope: even individuals who seemed to be born with tragedy in the blood can rise above their challenges and find success and happiness in their lives.

Personality Profile

Viraj's most dominant personality trait, since joining Starfleet, is social awkwardness. He was extremely social on his home planet, but among members of the UFP, he has become extremely reserved to prevent offending his peers. On Delta IV, communication and every aspect of daily life includes physical and sexual contact. Since most of the physical contact he was accustomed to on Delta IV is considered to be forward when used on strangers in the Federation, Viraj generally abstains from all physical contact.

As well, his vocabulary is considerably limited, because the Deltan verbal language does not include even half of the words found in Federation Standard. Because of this, Viraj takes very slow and deliberate steps in getting to know new people on a personal basis. He doesn't allow his challenges to dampen his mood, though, as his eternally sunny disposition and his eagerness to please others has stayed with him all his life. He has a love of learning, and is certain that Starfleet will provide much knowledge for him to gain.

Being in Starfleet hasn't changed him, per se, but it has brought forth aspects of his personality that were once dormant. His self-consciousness has been extremely heightened because his cultural norms are so different from the majority of the Federation, and because he has a difficult time with understanding the complexities of vocal intonation and with reading the body language of non-Deltans. As well, his quirky, occasionally self-depreciative, sense of humour has bubbled to the surface.

Viraj has a very strong belief in Ix, the Deltan god. It is written that Ix was created by the belief of the Deltan people, and that Ix exists in the collective areas of every humanoid mind that seems to be nothing more than untapped potential.

Physical Description Deltans have naturally hearty constitutions and lean musculature; with the aid of continuing his Starfleet Academy's fitness regime, Viraj is in peak physical condition for his age and species. As a Deltan, he has no body hair, except for his eyebrows and eyelashes. While never scientifically proven, if the pheromones that his body secretes were ever left unchecked, anyone near him would likely believe him to be the most attractive person alive.
Special Notes Viraj has sworn to a Starfleet-insisted Oath of Celibacy. Nearly all humanoid species are susceptible to becoming extremely addicted to any form of sexual contact with Deltans, for a number of reasons. In most cases, this addiction leads to madness. To assist in his oath of celibacy, Viraj's uniform is specially designed to absorb any of his excess sweat, saliva and pheromones, all of which can be dangerously addictive.

While Deltans normally have varying degrees of telepathic abilities, Viraj was born a mutant aberration, of sorts, without any psionic potential at all.
