Family Sanat's father, Amir, is a former CO of the USS Kamino (medically retired) and his mother, Lok, a semi-retired biologist. He has one brother, Hasin, a chemical engineer on Delphi Minor.
Background Born 2348 on the desert world of Ioterthe` in an unstable region of space known as the Badlands, Sanat's childhood was rather uneventful except for an occasional trip with his father onboard the USS Kamino on those rare visits by a Federation star ship into the Badlands for resupply or security missions. Or, the overland forays with his mother when she visited the nearby Korossini nature preserve.

It was purely by chance that he discovered both his ability as well as love of flight through a gift from his father. The small wooden glider fascinated the young human-Vulcan as he flew it over and over in the brisk desert winds that swirled around their small house on the outskirts of Iotawa City. Not satisfied with simply watching from outside the tiny craft, Vijay cajoled his mother into letting him take shuttle rides around the planet with colleagues of hers as they went back and forth from various locations conducting experiments and expeditions to recover valuable specimens for study.

Soon he was flying the shuttlecraft for the scientists as they hopped from area to area on Ioterthe` in search of scientific curiosities. And flying it quite expertly in fact; on one trip in particular, Sanat managed to fly through a very ferocious sand storm to bring an injured scientist back to Iotawa City for medical care after he fell off of a small cliff chasing a rather elusive reptilian 'moth.' Upon hearing about her son's exploits during the emergency and citing that it was logical to have experienced shuttle pilots on the sparsely populated planet, Lok enrolled her son in Basic and Intermediate flight training to further hone his rapidly developing skills in this arena.

Call it luck or chance, possibly even fate, but for some reason only vaguely known to Sanat, he placed an application to enter Starfleet Academy after flying shuttles around his home world for only six months upon completion of his flight training. The young human-Vulcan was accepted after his second attempt to get in and interned at the newly completed facilities on New South Wales. He enjoyed the academy and was a standby pilot for the Nova Squadron, which resulted in an Academy Bar being awarded to him at graduation. Sanat graduated near the top of his class in 2374 and asked to be assigned to flight control duties aboard the USS Kodiak. He was accepted.

Sanat was just getting comfortable with his new ship and duties when the war with the Dominion erupted. Time after time during the three-year conflict, the young ensign flew the escort vessel in and out of danger with aplomb and skill. During one particularly vicious battle, Vijay saved the Kodiak through a series of last second turns, twists and loops as it dueled with two Jem'hadar fighters of comparable size and capacity.

His captain felt his actions were noteworthy considering his injuries and his abject refusal to be relieved or treated as they tried to outmaneuver both attackers and protect their supply ship charge at the same time. It was during a direct hit on the 'Bear that hull fragments tore through his control station chair and into the flesh behind his right ear rending it down to his neck and into the left shoulder blade. Fighting pain and blood loss Vijay managed to keep the ship maneuvering as his CO struggled to find a way to win the battle. They finally triumphed over both ships when Sanat was able to bring the Kodiak in on an oblique weapons angle enabling their phaser and photon volley to cause both enemy ships to collide and destroy themselves. The young ensign was finally ordered to relinquish his station after hostile action abated, which came mere seconds before he passed out. He was awarded his Dominion Campaign ribbon as well as the Pilot's Flight Cross and Purple Heart for his actions during this particular battle.

The officer continued to serve with the USS Kodiak until she was dry-docked for extensive refitting and consequently, he was transferred to the much larger USS Kennedy where his career seemed destined for great things (within his first two months of service aboard, Sanat revamped the flight control subroutines to make it possible to maneuver the large ship more precisely in combat and received a Commendation for his intensive programming modifications) until that is, the Dominion decided to clean out the Badlands once and for all...and kill his family as they struggled to survive the ravages of the war. Sanat felt obligated to rescue them because Ioterthe` was considered too far away for the Federation to intervene on their behalf.

The incident is only known to a few key officers on the Kennedy and thus nothing aside from his refusal to take promotion marred his short stay onboard the large carrier star ship. But Vijay knew he had to put this breech of discipline behind him and try and kick start his stalled career. To do so meant leaving the big ship. At this juncture of time, Sanat applied for and was granted a transfer to the USS Sulu as a senior flight controller.

Personality Profile Intelligent and known for his bravery in the face of danger, Vijay is a soft spoken man that seemly knows exactly when to apply his full talents without hesitation or restraint. He rarely contradicts or challenges the orders of those above him, however, if the circumstances warrant that he become vocally concerned about a directive or order, Sanat strives for the most direct and succinct manner in which to do so.

He pushes himself physically and often helps others do the same. A natural outdoorsman (a result of his many journeys and expeditions with his mother on Ioterthe`), Sanat willingly volunteers for away team duties where he can satisfy his need to be outdoors (challenging himself in a variety of ways) as well as to pilot the smaller and more nimble shuttles when mission parameters allow such flights.

Coupled with his love of the natural world is his equally insatiable appetite for flying. Whenever possible, Sanat flies sailplanes reminiscent of the 21st century before the Beijing Security Accords of 2258 banned the powerless flight vehicles on Earth. He usually makes use of the holodeck to fill this void in times of extended patrols or space dock.

As much as blessed as cursed with a double helping of both human and Vulcan emotional traits, Sanat has embraced his feelings fully much to his mother's chagrin. Thus, sometimes, Sanat can be occasionally characterized as moody when he is coping with exceptionally strong emotions or feelings brought about by events around him.

Physical Description Vijay does not outwardly show his mixed heritage and can easily pass for a regular human male without much difficulty; his Vulcan mother's outward physical traits were not passed onto Sanat, and thus, he does not have the pointed ears or a coppery complexion associated with a full-blooded Vulcan.

Wearing short dark brown hair and possessing sharp light brown eyes, Sanat is very physically fit and trim for his height, although some might consider him skinny or underweight at 205 lbs., he is quite capable of extended aerobic activities or combat. He keeps a rigorous workout schedule and is seen in the gym often.

When not on duty, Vijay tends to dress casually in loose cotton shirts and pants reminiscent of his cultural heritage. He wears sandals much of the time and occasionally sports a silver necklace given to him by his mother.

He does have a noticeable scar behind the right ear that runs down his neck to the left shoulder blade from his combat time onboard the USS Kodiak.

Special Notes He is very close to his family and disobeyed a direct order to rescue them from certain death during a Dominion-backed purge of the Badlands. While Sanat was assigned to the USS Kennedy, he borrowed one of the ship's Danube class runabouts to evacuate the Vijay's from Ioterthe` to the closest Federation Protectorate, Bajor. As a result of his misconduct (but much heralded bravery and devotion), Captain Homanker 'arranged' for his court martial to 'go away' in exchange for Sanat's refusal to accept his upcoming (and well deserved) promotion to Lt. (JG). The Human-Vulcan officer considered the arrangement as being mutually beneficial to himself and Starfleet, hence his current rank of Ensign.

However, there is a vaguely worded reprimand concerning the affair in his official records.

Sanat is interested in avian(s) and likes to spend time watching or interacting with them as his other activities allow. He has collected many holobooks, statues and memorabilia associated with the different birds found throughout the Federation.
