Background

Prior to 2378, there were few members of Starfleet shaping up to more mediocre careers than the one of Ethan Anderson Storm. Born into a family with more than five generations of Starfleet excellence, average student Storm only gained Academy admission after both his father and grandfather wielded their considerable influence. When put to the task, Storm managed to finish first in the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program, proving to his family that it was never a question of ability but one of focus and discipline.

Once at the Academy, Storm immediately resumed his less-than-stellar scholastic performance and put most of his time and energy into athletics. In spite of his high aptitude testing scores in nearly all Starfleet career paths, Storm approached the Academy program with a relaxed attitude and barely managed to stay enrolled. In his four years there, Storm racked up a record number of academic reprimands and probations without ever actually being suspended. Even though Storm performed at a level that (again, barely) guaranteed continued enrolment, many rumors unfairly credited his family's influence. While it could not be denied that his family got him there, Storm managed to stay on his own limited merits.

Storm participated in the Academy hoverball, ju jitsu, fencing, and parrises squares teams as well as various track and field events. Storm placed in the Starfleet Academy marathon's top five all four years of his attendance and even resurrected the sport of basketball from semi-obscurity. The Academy intramural league he began continues even today. If Storm had a saving grace socially among the driven Academy cadets it was his athletic ability, though many still frowned on his lack of scholarly achievement. In fact, more than a few fellow cadets who had tougher times gaining Academy admission resented Storm for just cruising on thrusters while others had to work so hard. Storm proved to be such an affable person, however, that he managed to be popular even among his detractors.

Storm lost his grandfather (Admiral Anderson Storm, a genuine Starfleet legend) just days before he began his Cadet Cruise as a Security Officer aboard the USS Yeager. The loss of the family patriarch had a profound effect on Cadet Storm and he performed his duties aboard the Yeager far beyond expectations. He even met the first true love of his life, Science Officer Ensign Seja Krill. Seven months into the Cadet Cruise, Storm asked the young Andorian to marry him and the couple became engaged. It was then that hostilities with some renegade Jem Hadar still in the Alpha Quadrant began anew and the Yeager's inexperienced crew found themselves training under fire.

During one battle involving over 20 starships, some Jem Hadar ships flanked the Federation forces and began to fire upon the rear support ships. The Yeager was supplying the fleet with communications support when the Jem Hadar attacked. Storm was assigned to prepare auxiliary control along with Seja and a few other cadets and young officers in the event the bridge had to be evacuated. The first few shots demolished the Yeager's shields and the next few destroyed the bridge module and everybody inside it. Storm and the other trainees suddenly found themselves in control of a dying ship.

In this instance, Storm's lifelong experience with team sports led him to the center seat. He gave the order for a tactical retreat that drew away several of the small attack ships from the larger Dominion warships. Working with Seja, the two devised a means to augment the structural integrity field and then create an inverse gravity well with an intentional warp core overload. This risky manoeuvre temporarily caused the Yeager to radiate a gravity wake on the order of a small black hole and the pursuing Jem Hadar attack ships were caught in the trap. As they were pulled towards the Yeager, they were yanked to pieces by intense gravitational forces. Storm commanded the Yeager back to its original position and led the debris field of destroyed attack ships to one of the Jem Hadar warships. The inverse gravity well was dispersed and nearly all of the debris bombarded one of the warships. The resulting shockwave from the warship's destruction nearly tore the Yeager apart and the ship began to drift in space. Eventually Storm managed to restore auxiliary power and the crippled Yeager finally limped to safety. Storm's actions were declared heroic and the young officer found himself decorated. He was even offered a spot at Command School.

The moment was tempered not only by the massive losses for Starfleet but by the personal losses for Storm: Both Seja and Ethan's father, Captain Richard Allen Storm commanding the USS Los Angeles in the same battle, lost their lives. Grieving and haunted by guilt over Seja, Storm rejected the responsibility of Command School and opted instead for Advanced Tactical Training. He excelled in his studies and has been assigned to the USS Sulu.

Personality Profile

Those who knew the grinning unmotivated athlete from Storm's Academy days and who are unaware of his subsequent adventures are often shocked by the difference. His service in Starfleet has been marked by a lot of achievement tempered with grievous personal losses. While he still is quick to grin, he is far more quiet and thoughtful than the jock they remember. This calculated introspection is how he continually improves himself. Many new acquaintances mistake Storm's thoughtfulness for arrogance and his decisiveness for cockiness. But those who seek to discover what's below the surface are almost never disappointed with what they find.

Physical Description

Ethan possesses the type of leanly muscular body that can only be the result of determined physical activity over the course of many years. His bearing reminds one of a tightly coiled spring and his feet never rest flat on the ground. While he often gives the impression of being perpetually ready for action, his broad boyish grin and tousled hair undermine this aura of perfect control.
