Drokar is a non-Federation planet. There are five races of Drokari on the planet, and Shirik belongs to the Rennari people, who are the dominant race of the planet. The other four races have been subjugated by the Rennari, and serve them. The planet itself is rich with resources, particularly deuterium and dilithium, which is of interest to the Federation, but membership cannot be offered to the planet as long as the practice of slavery remains. In order to show the Drokari people the benefits of Federation membership and give them incentive to change their culture to abolish slavery, the Federation set up a cultural exchange program of sorts. A Federation ambassador was based on Drokar to live there and both teach about the Federation and learn about the Drokari, and a Drokari would be chosen to be sent to Starfleet Academy and serve in the fleet, to learn about the Federation and cultural diversity. Shirik, being the youngest daughter and thus the most expendable child, was chosen by the queen to represent Drokar in this way.

Shirik was raised as the Fifth Princess of Drokar, which means she was given all the same training and privileges as the First Princess. She was taught at a private school, lived at the Royal Palace with her family, and had as many servants as she liked. The adjustment to life at the Academy was a difficult one, but Shirik was eager for the chance to go, since it would give her the opportunity to become someone of importance, with the chance to work her way up through the ranks, where at home she would never be more than what she was, unless her mother and all four sisters perished.

At the academy, she was not well liked by many of her peers, many of whom said she had a bad attitude. While intelligent and efficient, she can be arrogant and condescending to those she sees as being beneath her (which is nearly everyone). Her roommate at the academy immediately disliked her, and they spent most of their time together ignoring one another. She spent most of her time in her room or in various labs, studying and experimenting, usually alone, and was almost never seen in public at social functions. Some of the other cadets joked that they probably wouldn't even see her at the graduation ceremony.

They didn't, because Shirik did not graduate with her class. She decided on two full majors, one in Science and one in Engineering, and finished the two in six years. She felt the extra time and studies would better prepare her for her assignments in Starfleet. She went on to Command school after graduation, wanting all the skills necessary so that she might one day command a ship of her own, and perhaps beyond.

Shirik's first assignment was on the USS Tristan, a Galaxy-class science vessel sent to examine a wormhole in an uncharted region of space. The Tristan was destroyed by unexpected gravitational fluxes at the wormhole, and while several escape pods were launched, only three were recovered by the ship that answered the Tristan's distress call. Shirik was one of the three survivors.

After debriefing, Shirik was reassigned, to the USS Wandering Spirit, another science vessel, this one Intrepid class. She was assigned to engineering, and did her work well, learning much about the internal workings of the class and its state of the art computerized systems, including the holosystems and replication systems.

Her last assignment was aboard the USS Exeter, another Intrepid class ship, where she worked ops. Again, she did her job efficiently and well, and while she prefers working with the ship's systems rather than working with administration, she knew these skills would be needed for later use if she were to move up the ranks. While the ops position put her in greater contact with other crewmembers, she did not socially interact well outside her work.

She is intelligent and quick to learn new things. But she is aware of her lack of knowledge in social interaction. To her, this is irrelevant for the time being, as the skills necessary to perform her duties mainly involve communicating with machines rather than people. She also has a temper, and a long memory when she is wronged by someone. Although on her home world violence is often a means of solving disputes, she carefully curbs any such impulses she may have, until appropriate. Her people are all taught as part of their education both armed and unarmed combat, so she was ahead of the other cadets in this area when she joined the Academy.

She is naturally suspicious of people and their motives, although she has become less so since her time in the Academy, where she has learned that most of the time, people here tend to speak the truth and not have hidden agendas. She has a low tolerance for people who she deems as less intelligent than herself, and no patience for unprofessional behavior or inefficiency. She is driven, and stubborn, and once set to a problem, will not give up until she has found some sort of solution. She is also very precise and meticulous in her work, and doesn't tolerate sloppy work. Her interests lie in anything having to do with computers, with her specialty being in holotechnology and replicator technology. She also likes to read, exercise, and practice her combat techniques. When not doing these things, she is usually writing programs, including holoprograms. She also on rare occasions is known to play the Sundvas, a flute-like instrument.

In the academy, Shirik had her first experiences with telepathic races such as Betazoids. Most of these experiences were not pleasant, and Shirik has a strong mistrust of telepaths that read others' thoughts without permission. She specifically dislikes Betazoids for this reason, and the fact that Vulcans respect the privacy of other minds has increased her respect of them.

Just as in the academy, she spends little time in the public eye, eating meals in her room when she can, and exercising with holographic sparring partners. While she does not dislike anyone until she has reason to, she has learned that people frequently dislike her, and feels it's more prudent to avoid people than try to interact with them and fail. When she is forced into social situations, she will usually tend to stay near any Vulcans present. For this reason, and because of her appearance and demeanor, she is usually mistaken for a Vulcan by people when they first meet her. This confusion is enhanced by the fact that she speaks Vulcan.

Shirik is naturally curious, and likes to learn new skills and information about other races. This curiosity is usually the only thing that will lead her to seek out fellow crewmen, to ask them questions about their people.

On her home world, all Rennari carry a dagger- like knife called a Kemla with them at all times made from a black metal native to Drokar. When she joined the academy she learned that she was not allow to carry this weapon with her at all times, but she does keep it in her room within reach, and takes it with her on any away missions she is allowed to. She tends to trust her blade more than a phaser, which can malfunction or become drained. She is very highly skilled in the use of this particular weapon, having been trained from childhood in its use.

She has one scar on her abdomen, on the left side just below her ribcage, from a knife stab during a fight on her home world.
