| Background |
Kelzira was born in 2359 to Nezal and Pelora Pren, two reknowned biologists, on the Trill homeworld. Nezal and Pelora were living
in Kil'khuda City finalizing the resequencing of the genetic model of the N'Mhwaza, a
Germanium-based lifeform found in the N'Mhwaazol sector of the Beta Quadrant.
After the birth of their daughter, the two scientists decided to remain on Trill until such time as Kelzira could travel with them. Nezal was proud of his "little spot" as he liked to call Kelzira. She showed signs of brilliance like Pelora and himself. At an early age, she was able to grasp many of the concepts around which his and his wife's work revolved. She had a very acute mind and the cognative skills to make a wonderful scientist--the type of woman that would make an excellent candidate for joining. Science came easy for Kelzira. Under her parents tutelage, she had a firm grasp of biology, physics, and chemistry by the time she turned ten. She had been immersed in math and science through most of her childhood and in early testing, showed potential that reached to the levels of Soong, Einstein, and Hawking. Nezal Pren spoke with Ribal Zox, the Dean of Admissions for the Trill Symbiont Academy, about getting Kelzira into the program. Commissioner Zox jumped at the chance at getting the girl into the program. At eleven years old, Kelzira was accepted into the Academy, the youngest Trill ever admitted. Kelzira excelled at her studies in the academy. She was highly intelligent and motivated, but she was too young to be the host for a symbiont. After two years, Commissioner Zox informed Nezal that because she was so young, they wouldn't be able to accept her into the final years of the program. Nezal flew into fits of anger that the Commission could turn down his daughter. He spoke with Zox at length, and was informed by the Commissioner that one of the others on the panel felt that her youth would be a detriment to any of the Symbionts currently available. He suggested to Nezal, that he have his daughter apply for the joining in a few more years. When her father broke the news of the Commission's decision, Kelzira was elated. Her father couldn't understand her reaction and inquired why she should be so happy after such a grave decision. Kelzira sat Nezal down and explained to him that she didn't want to be joined. She was happy with who she was and what she was doing. She nearly broke his heart when she told him that she wanted to attend the Gilg'ane Academy of Fine Arts. Nezal was baffled that his daughter would wish to be an artist. They were a family of scientists. Her mother, her grandmother and grandfather, her cousins...they had all been scientists. She smiled and told him she'd always be a scientist, but she had dreamed of being an artist ever since she was a young girl. Nezal was upset that she would want to walk the path of the Tinkers and Gypsies, and forbade Kelzira to enter his home as long as she entertained such fanciful ideas. His was a family of scientists, and if Kelzira was not a scientist, then she would no longer be his daughter. Kelzira's shock was apparent. She had never known of her father's scientific fanaticism. She had expected him to open up and accept that she didn't want to follow his path. She had expected an open mind from him. Never in a million years would she have expected her decision to become an artist to result in denial. She felt guilty for her decision and briefly thought about letting her dreams go to make her father happy...but, Kelzira couldn't justify giving up her life to make her father happy. She couldn't throw away her happiness to appease his selfish wants. To pursue her dreams was a necessity. With only the clothing she wore, Kelzira left to become an artist. She worked around the school, earning her keep. She was a fine student and was well-liked by the staff at the Academy. She studied dance and music, acting and writing, and painting and sculpture. She studied every aspect of art they would let her. Her work was well-known by the staff and she was praised highly for what she did. Kelzira was never happier in her life. She kept in contact with her mother and missed her father. Pelora begged Kelzira to return home and reconcile with her father. The young woman refused. If her father wished her back, he would need to make the first move. He threw her out and she had followed her dreams. She would not give up her dreams for the sake of his happiness. Kelzira told her mother that when her father was ready to expand his thinking and accept her decision not to follow the path of science, she would be ready to come home. In 2375, Kelzira graduated from the Academy and joined a repertory theater troupe in the Capital City. After three months of work, while playing the role of Ophelia in a production of Hamlet, the "opportunity of a lifetime" presented itself. Kelzira had always looked to the stars and thought about travelling them as a member of Starfleet, but she wanted to spend a few years acting and painting before seriously thinking about applying for Starfleet Academy. After a performance of Hamlet one evening, a man in a Starfleet uniform approached her. He was a Starfleet recruiter. He told her that he'd loved the performance, and he'd heard much about her scientific talents. Lt. Browning sat down with Kelzira and told her about the possibilities that awaited her in Starfleet. She would be able to be a scientist and continue acting in a shipboard or stationside theater troupe. Kelzira spent the remainder of the night pondering his offer. By the next evening, she was on a transport for Terra. After four years of hard work, and a number of theatrical productions on the side, Kelzira graduated from Starfleet. As the rest of the cadets gathered outside of the Dean's office, all anticipating their new postings, Kelzira was excited to learn where she'd end up. As she got to the front of the line, she found her name. Following it across, she saw the words, USS Sulu. The new re-design of the Excelsior-class. Kelzira could barely contain her excitement. There would be six weeks of shore leave before she was required to rendezvous with the Sulu. She decided to return home. Things didn't go well trying to contact her father. He would still have nothing to do with her. With a sigh, she decided to check out the Captial City. She wanted to see if anyone from the theater was still around. When Kelzira was wandering around the theater a Starfleet officer approached her. He informed her that there had been an accident on the USS Hannibal and one of their engineers, a Trill officer named Looryx Rax, was killed. The Symbiont had survived, and needed a replacement. The records indicated that Kelzira had some gone through the trainging for becoming a host. Before Kelzira could tell him that she hadn't finished the training, a doctor appeared telling the lieutenant that the situation had worsened and they needed to transplant the Symbiont immediately. With a disgruntled sigh, Kelzira agreed to become a host. After the operation, Kelzira caught the next transport to meet with the USS Sulu. |
