Background

Lyrr Tayla was born in the year 2349 to Lyrr Koreg and Lyrr Feyla. Unlike many children during the Occupation, Tayla was fortunate enough not to be born in a Cardassian labour camp. Her mother and father worked for a Gul stationed on Bajor to oversee local operations in the city of Danae. Her father was assigned manual labour, such as repair of electronic equipment and tending the gardens, which had been altered to the Gul's specifications so that he could cultivate vegetables from his native Cardassia. Her mother's duties included care and upkeep of the manor he had comandeered, but her unoffical duties were to attend to the Gul's personal needs, especially in his bed at night.

This was the life Tayla was born into. It was purely through the Prophets' blessing that Tayla was even allowed to live, or perhaps the Gul's arrogance. He thought it another victory for the Cardassian race to conceive a token of war in the form of a half Bajoran, half Cardassian child, so he allowed Feyla to carry the child to term. Gul Perak had departed before Tayla was born for a meeting of the Cardassian war council, which proved to be another blessing by the Prophets. Tayla was born during the Gul's absence, and much to her parents' joy and relief, she showed no physical signs of the Cardassian blood. This discovery, of course, brought with it a major concern. If the Gul returned to find the child he had planned on claming as his own purely the product of two Bajoran parents, Feyla and Koreg were certain he would put the child to death. So, her parents devised a clever and deceptive scheme that would preserve their child's life. During Koreg's many excursions into town, he caught up with a member of the Resistance and asked for her aid. The woman agreed and that night, after a tearful goodbye from Koreg and Feyla, Tayla was secreted away. To the Gul, the child had died during the birthing and the body burned in a sacred Bajoran ritual. This saved both the child, and Feyla and Koreg from death, but also gave Tayla a chance for life and a certain kind of freedom.

The Resistance had no place for or resources they could afford to expend on a child, so Tayla was given to a family living in Kendra Province. She was raised by them as her own until the age of 16, at which time she left home to join a local resistance cell. She was kept out of the fighting during her first few years there, many of the cell members stating she'd only trip over her gangly legs and accidentally discharge her phaser in their direction. This time away from the front lines allowed Tayla time for hobbies, such as tinkering with electronic equipment and learning to read and write. She became quite handy around the camp and was assigned repair duties, as well as help caring for the injured. This is where she gained skills that would help her in her future career at Starfleet.

In her 18th year, Tayla was finally allowed to pick up her first weapon and fight for her oppressed people. She proved herself a capable fighter and participated in many pivotal battles fought by her resistance cell. The Occupation ended two years later, after which time Tayla was left to weigh her options. She could stay behind and help rebuild her home, or she could have a hand in making certain her people were never enslaved again. She joined the Bajoran militia for just this purpose and after a year serving on Bajor, she was recruited to serve on the space station seized from the Cardassians by the Federation, Deep Space 9. She spent one year there as an officer, honing her technical skills and polishing up her social graces by learning how to interact with non-Bajoran races; after fighting against the Cardassians for years, Tayla developed a minor case of Xenophobia, but working on DS9, she developed a tolerance towards alien races.

After her stay there, Tayla decided to travel to Earth and join Starfleet academy. Working on the station, she learned much and acquired many skills, but she craved for more knowledge that would allow her to advance in her field. She knew the best way to achieve this was to apply to Starfleet academy. It took much perseverence and some pleading, but with the sponsorship of her superior officer, Tayla was accepted. She completed her training there three years later, having excelled in her schooling due to her previous experience serving on Deep Space 9. After her graduation, she was assigned to the USS Davies as an Operations Officer. Her advancement through the ranks surprised her commanding officer and by 2377, she had attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

She worked diligently and impressed her superiors, so much so that they encouraged her to train for the Bridge Officer's Exam. When she wasn't busy with her duties, Tayla would study and prepare for the Exam, and on 2379, she wrote and passed to attain the rank of Commander. She was immediately offered a post on the new Intrepid-class ship, the USS Sulu after endorsement from her commanding officer on the Davies. Feeling the need for a change, Tayla quickly accepted and left the Davies a month later for service on the Sulu.
