2379 - A chance encounter in the Gamma Quadrant between the *Sulu* and a Wadi transport led to a cultural exchange. Though limited somewhat by the Wadi's near-singular focus on recreational activities and game play, the experience proved positive for both crews. So many Wadi enjoyed the game of "Texas Hold 'Em" introduced by Ensign Farrell, he was made an honorary citizen of their planet. It took the better part of a week for the painted cranial runes to fade from his forehead.
Background Mason Farrell was born to Franklin and LeeAnn Farrell, 5 May, 2349, the oldest of five children. The boy and his siblings were raised under modest circumstances in the little town of McNary, Texas, within sight of the Rio Grande. His father worked as a manager on the "Double J" cattle ranch, owned by Farrell's grandparents, Jack and Juana Masterson. The "Double J" was a working ranch, raising real cattle for sale to luxury food markets.

Franklin Farrell was killed in a freak accident involving a mad bull, and LeeAnn's mental health deteriorated rapidly after losing her husband so suddenly. The young Mason shouldered more and more responsibility for his family as his mother got worse, and that sense of duty was what would eventually lead him to Starfleet.

Mason did his secondary schooling via computer extension courses, as did all children in McNary. He excelled regardless, doing his lessons on a PADD under the west Texas stars. In his non-school time, he helped work the ranch. By the time his application for Starfleet was accepted he was well-versed in all facets of ranch administration, and had taken over many of the day-to-day duties his age-slowed Grandpa Jack was increasingly unable to manage.

Farrell's Academy years went quickly. He chose Operations as his specialty, using his administrative mind to organize starship systems instead of stock lists. He performed admirably, and received a number of the minor academic commendations prevalent in the Academy. He graduated in the top ten percent of his class, and was assigned to Starbase 242 to learn the ins and outs of Starbase Operations.

Starbase 242 would have been better named Outpost 242. It turned out to be a heinous backwater on the edge of Orion-controlled space with a reputation for rough-and-tumble locals; a place where Starfleet officers leaving the station proper to move among the civilian population always went armed. While there, Farrell met several people that would change his life forever. He remembers Jan Augsberger, the take-charge, no-nonsense chief of station operations, the most fondly. Augsberger took the young ensign Farrell under her wing, and her glowing reports brought him to the attention of station commander Xaj Trow. Commander Trow was a tough Andorian, but was nevertheless impressed with the confident and well-organized young Ensign. It was Trow who saw to it that Farrell was promoted in 2374 to Lieutenant, junior grade.

Near the planetside portion of the station complex lived an Andorian ganglord named "Blue Ijak" Yaranda, who had made a career out of a whole host of vices including extorting money from storeowners in the port marketplace. He was widely feared by the local populace, and no one could be persuaded to testify against him, so he was free to run amok. Yaranda and Augsberger hated each other. Yaranda thought she was a meddling bitch (she was compiling a file on him) that needed some house training, and Augsberger thought he was a tapeworm that should have been purged long ago.

In the middle of Farrell's fourth year on the station, Augsberger and Farrell were planetside. On the way back to the shuttlebays they came across Yaranda assaulting a bar owner for a payoff. Augsberger verbally challenged Yaranda, the pair traded insults, and weapons were drawn before anyone really knew what was happening. Augsberger went down quickly under multiple energy beams. Farrell kept Yaranda's gang at bay using both his and the fallen Augsberger's phasers, keeping them both on wide spread, and firing both in unision. When the nearest security detail arrived, the gang began a retreat. Farrell contacted Trow, and the Commander ordered the Lieutenant to return to the station proper immediately for a full report on the situation. Farrell was preparing to comply when Augsberger finally died, her disruptor burns too great to bear.

Farrell, maddened by grief at the loss of his mentor, took command of the security detail, and led them after the fleeing gang. Under his direction, the security personnel captured the gang in its entirety. Farrell had to be talked out of killing Yaranda by the detail's chief petty officer, and after a few tense moments allowed Yaranda to be taken into custody. Yaranda was quickly convicted of a number of crimes (including the murder of Augsberger) and sentenced to life in prison.

Commander Trow, though saddened at the death of Augsberger, was more than happy to be rid of Yaranda. He would have filed the appropriate reports and let the incident quietly fade but for Farrell's insubordination. Trow had no choice but to call for an adjutant, and a court martial was convened. The judge martial demoted Farrell to Ensign for Gross Insubordination, and ordered him to attend counseling for a minimum of one year. Farrell completed his fourth year on Starbase 242 as an Ensign, but was the recipient of many free drinks at the hands of many grateful barkeeps.

After that eventful fourth year, Farrell was assigned to the USS Ranger, an otherwise unremarkable ship of the line, due for permanent decommissioning. He served flawlessly as an Operations officer aboard Ranger for its final cruise, earning commendations for his efficiency.

At the completion of Ranger's final cruise, Farrell was transferred to the operations staff of the USS Sulu.

Personality Profile Farrell is a well-organized man who can maintain clear thought under stress. In psychological profiling sims, he has exhibited a penchant for unorthodox strategies utilizing direct action. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and to Starfleet.

He excels in areas where many details must be synthesized into a coherent whole. Indeed, he revels in a complex task performed well. A frequent (and some would say addicted) gambler, Farrel is a Poker ace, a Domjot shark, and has a knack for beating the house at Dabo. He carries a rating of 1492 with the UFP Chess Counsel. He reads biographies extensively, and enjoys recreating famous battles on the holodeck to consider different tactics. An unrepentant tinker, he finds it difficult not to meddle with the workings of any machine he encounters. He plays the piano and the harmonica.

On his shore leaves, he rides horses (or the local equivalent). He also enjoys fishing and sport shooting. He owns a beautiful matched pair of ancient Colt dragoon revolvers, a gift from his father when he was a boy. These hang on the wall of his stateroom in an antique case. He loves spicy food, and this affection has left his olfactory senses dulled; food must be spiced to a level that would make a Klingon's mouth burn in order for it to meet his approval.

Physical Description Farrell is boyishly handsome, and maintains an aura of affable honesty. He walks with a swagger, grins readily, squints to look intimidating, and takes care to be polite to women.
