Background Born on January 1, 2350 at the stroke of midnight, Raina spent a large part of her childhood aboard the USS Scimitar. Her parents Anya and Caid Derrell, were ecstatic to finally have a child. While they had dedicated their lives to serving the Federation as Starfleet officers, they had also been trying to start a family for some time.

She is the older of twin children; her younger sister, Aslynn was born only a few hours later. Shortly before Raina and her sister turned thirteen, the family temporarily relocated to Betazed when Anya started to have problems with her second pregnancy. However she lost the baby eventually anyway. All of them felt the loss deeply.

While her parents eventually returned to their duties aboard the Scimitar, Raina and Aslynn remained on Betazed at an Academy Prep School. It was a change from life aboard a starship. Yet at times Raina still felt like her parents cared more about duty than they did about the twin girls.

Raina was accepted at Starfleet Academy and chose to major in Medicine, with a minor in Psychology. During her cadet years she learned to juggle both a demanding work load and various extracurricular activities. For the first time she truly found a way to make a difference. As an extra challenge she completed her certification as a Paramedic to gain some experience while working on her medical studies.

Immediately she started her studies at Starfleet Medical. Since her father was a Doctor, Raina had a role model to follow even though she attempted to make a reputation for herself separate from his accomplishments. Due to the high demand for ER trained medical personnel, Raina chose to specialize in emergency medicine. As part of her training Raina finished her final year of medical school via correspondence courses since tensions with the Dominion required her skills in the field. She was assigned to a mobile Search & Rescue squad based on Betazed. She met several people including Ambassador Scott.

Things took a drastic turn when her unit was dispatched for some frontier work at Yassir Colony. It was also home to a rare mineral, called Saphrite. Only Federation doctors knew how to synthesize it into a medication. Aquafir in its fully synthesized form proved to be a rather effective pain killer. However if improperly refined the medication only served as a long lasting nerve inhibitor. The colony resided on the fringes of a piece of a key sector located between the Argolis Cluster and Betazed.

Cardassia took great interest in the colony after it noted a large buildup of Federation forces convening there. For a short time things were fairly stable but quiet until the colony fell into enemy hands. They chose to move in during the first stages of significant mobilization efforts by Starfleet.

Yassir became a staging point for further raids into the key sector and research into the medicinal uses of the mineral became paramount reason's for the colony's incursions by Cardassian forces. Overall the experience affected Raina in ways she never imagined. It also left her with an indelible impression of those dark times.

Raina soon learned she was a POW. Due to her work on Yassir she became a prime candidate for the Cardassians to question. All Federation medical personnel on the colony were subject to the same inhumane treatment. The enemy chose not to differentiate between experience levels or qualifications in the interest of time.

She endured interrogation session on top of interrogation session as her captors attempted to obtain vital medical information. When that failed other means were invoked in attempts to get Raina to cooperate. In a wicked twist of fate Raina's life became more complicated when she learned she was pregnant. The father turned out to be one of her Cardassian guards. Through continued mistreatment and torture she miscarried the baby to the delight of her captors. Raina remained a prisoner of the Cardassians until Yassir's liberation by Federation forces.

After the conflict she transferred to a different post as a medical officer but remained on Betazed until 2376. Initially that was determined to be the best and closest place for her to recover from her ordeal. She was then offered an assignment aboard the USS Aurora. It provided a change of pace from Betazed. Raina served as part of Aurora's crew and tried to rebuild her life after her experiences during the war. For the first time Raina was truly able to focus on honing her skills.

Her tour of duty there ended three years later when Raina was offered a chance to transfer to the USS Sulu. As another constant goal she is always working to expand her skills as a medical officer.

Personality Profile Raina has always been very focused. Passionate about life, ambitious about completing the goals she sets for herself, and adventurous. She also tends to view things very analytically or through the eyes of an explorer. Many, including her parents, considered her a bit of a wild child. Starfleet has tamed that, though she still knows how to have a good time when it's time to relax off duty. Raina is a dedicated officer. There has also been her share of obstacles to overcome.

Duty on Yassir forced her to face mortality head on. Raina quickly learned that survival comes in more forms than just physical. Since that time there has been a side of her that is noticeably more guarded. Though Raina's overall sense did not waver in the slightest as a result of her experiences. If anything she had become more sincere in her desire to serve the Federation and heal others. Despite what many say she also doesn't consider herself a hero.

Relationships are one area that haven't gone so well for Raina, perhaps because a silent hidden part of her views herself as damaged goods. There is also a part of her that believes she failed so many by being unable everyone she treated during that time.

Physical Description Her presence can be quite intimidating if Raina wants it to. At 5'6" she has a very athletic body yet is still quite feminine. She turns to various sports as exercise though she generally prefers Martial Arts or Figure Skating. Just one aspect of the importance she places on both mental and physical health.

As an attempt to hide that ugly scar on her abdominal region, Raina got a tattoo. It is a beautiful artistic Betazoid symbol which stands for 'peace.'

Special Notes Occasionally Raina has also been seen wearing a small silver hoop in her navel, when she is dressed casually. Perhaps it is also another method of distracting the eye from her scars.
