Background

Much of Taylor Bennett's early life was a a blur of activity. Her parents were both geneticists, and had relocated to New Vancouver five years before their daughter's birth. They were studying members of a native species that seemingly had the ability to "reprogram" themselves to any change in environmental conditions. Each new generation was born, adapted to whatever changes the environment had sustained.

Michael and T'Lin Bennett were unable to have children without assistance. Thanks to their fields of study, they were able to help themselves, and it was not long before T'Lin found herself pregnant. Their only child, born under a full moon on the night of the celebration on the fiftieth anniversary of the colony's founding, was a joy to them. They named her Taylor, after Michael Bennett's great-grandmother, a Starfleet admiral many years earlier. She was a precocious, inquisitive child and always found herself in some trouble that she'd concocted. Despite the trouble, she always found a way to get herself out of the trouble as well.

When she turned six, Taylor visited a travelling martial arts demonstration that was passing through the colony. She was completely fascinated by not only the graceful movements, but the inner peace the practitioners seemed to exhibit. She began borrowing books from the library, soaking up whatever information she could find on the particular style she'd witnessed and anything else she could find.

The following year, one of the men from the demonstration returned to New Vancouver to settle. It wasn't long after his arrival that he opened a school. Taylor was one of his first students.

She was a voracious student, and excelled in everything he taught. She was the first on the colony to attain the much-coveted black belt. Her training was far from over, however. She continued to probe her teacher for more training, and he willingly gave in to the pleas of his star pupil. She leaned a variety of styles, both internal and external. By the time she was sixteen, she held seven blackbelts and was assisting to teach at the school.

Taylor spent between six and ten hours training every day, and while the effort did pay off, she was lacking in other areas. She wasn't as strong in the sciences or engineering, though she did manage to become adept with dancing, drawing on the grace of her Art.

Shortly before the fall term began, one of the colony's leaders, a former Starfleet captain, approached Taylor. As he spoke to her, he told her all about Starfleet and his time there. He'd witnessed one of her exhibitions, and knew with her talent and focus, she would make a remarkable Starfleet officer.

She was hesitant at first, but it wasn't long before he'd won her over. She agreed to apply, and he wrote a letter of sponsorship for her. Three weeks before term, Taylor Bennett boarded a shuttle and set off for Earth.

The test wasn't as easy as she expected, but she did well...at least well enough to be admitted. She was put on a probationary watch for the first semester, but quickly allayed all fears.

While she wasn't at the top of her class, Taylor was both well-liked and did well enough to catch the notice of several of the Academy staff. She was a solid student, and her future was bright.

At the beginning of her second year at the Academy, Taylor was asked to help teach some of the self-defense courses, and she jumped at the chance.

Her time at the Academy seemed to fly by, but Taylor made the most of it. She focused her studies on security and tactical operations and carried a secondary focus of operations management. She did well enough to earn her pick of posts, and she chose the USS Lexington, a new Sovereign-class starship.

Life on the Lex was different, but Taylor enjoyed her time there. She made many friends, and saw her share of action cleaning up after the war. She was discouraged that her commanding officer, a Tellarite with no sense of humour and the attitude of an constipated targ, continued to pass her over for promotion. After the USS Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant, some of her friends on the Lex kept telling Taylor she'd been Kimmed, a condition of being passed over for promotion after promotion no matter how good you were...named for Ensign Harry Kim who spent seven years in the Delta Quadrant and returned the same rank as he left.

All in all, Taylor didn't mind. As long as she was doing what she enjoyed, she didn't care how many pips adorned her collar.

At the end of two years on the Lexington, Taylor did decide to apply for a transfer. She looked through the various ships with open posts, and found one she liked: the USS Sulu, a vessel that would soon be embarking for the Gamma Quadrant for an exploration mission.

Personality Profile

Taylor Bennett was voted "The Chipperest Officer in All of Starfleet" by her friends at the Academy. Her friends on the Lex dubbed her "Most Likely to Be Effervescing." In short, Taylor is a very friendly, happy young woman. It is very rare for her to not be in a good mood.

Despite her Vulcan heritage, Taylor was raised with the customs of her father's people from Earth. While her mother still held an emotional distance from most of the universe, she opened herself up to her daughter. In the love that she received from her parents, Taylor grew up to be an emotional, happy, carefree person.

She is quick to make a friend and truly enjoys life.
