Jedi Power Rankings
These rankings are a guide for players on Tales from the Outer Rim who are writing for a Jedi or other Force Sensitive character to determine how strong their character can be within the Force and the types of things they can accomplish. With more experience and training, a Padawan will work upward in skill, but such advancements must be with the approval of a GM.
Rank 1 This is the beginning novice Jedi. They have just begun to sense the Force for what it is. They seem to see things before they happen, seem to be faster than the average for their species. A Rank 1 Jedi is at the beginning of the Padawan's journey. They are like Luke Skywalker in A New Hope.

The Padawan is just beginning to sense the Force. Control at this stage is sporadic and clumsy. Manipulation of objects or people through the Force is not possible.

During this stage, a Padawan is being first introduced to the lightsaber. They are limited to the use of a practice saber, and will still be fairly clumsy and awkward with the weapon.

Rank 2 The Jedi has progressed in skill. They are aware of the Force, are able to allow it to guide them some of the time. Reaching out to feel the Force is becoming easier. A Jedi of this Rank is like Luke Skywalker while on Dagobah in Empire Strikes Back.

At this stage, the Padawan has a greater awareness of the Force. Control is still shaky, but improving. A Padawan at this stage of development is more reliably able to reach out through the Force to sense life, manipulate objects. The Padawan does not possess much strength with the Force. Rocks and small cargo containers tend to be the limit of what can be lifted and moved. Manipulating the thoughts and emotions of biological entities is not yet possible.

At the second ranking, a Padawan is still using a practice lightsaber, but is gaining in skill and knowledge of the weapon. They will be learning the basics of lightsaber techniques, and show a fair amount of proficiency against practice drones. They are by no means ready to face a living foe.

Rank 3 Awareness of the Force is expanding. Reaching out through the Force, for guidance or manipulation, feels almost natural. A Rank 3 Jedi is well on the way toward Knighthood, but still has more to learn. Luke Skywalker toward the end of Empire Strikes Back is close to this level.

In this stage of a Jedi's development, the Padawan's sense of the Force is still growing. They have a greater awareness of the ebb and flow of the Force, of life around them. Their Control of the Force is more solid, allowing some of the clumsiness of the previous stage to slip away. With effort they may be able to slowly lift a speederbike or a droid, but it is a tiring endeavour. They may see the beginnings of being able to manipulate the thoughts of the extremely weak-minded. Communicating telepathically is still a skill beyond their abilities.

By this stage of development, a Padawan will show profound progress from the previous level of skill. The ability to defend against ranged attacks feels almost natural, though the ability to redirect attacks with any accuracy is still a ways off. If the Padawan hasn't yet, he or she should be nearing readiness to create their own lightsaber.

Rank 4 The Jedi is in the final stages of training to become a Jedi. Many of the feats common to the Jedi come easily, almost naturally. The ability to sense through the Force is more finely honed, and the Jedi's control is steady. Obi Wan Kenobi in Phantom Menace and Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones are at this level of ability.

As the Padawan reaches the final stage before Knighthood, sense and control of the Force are reliable. The typical physical feats of a Jedi, such as great leaps and amazing speed, are almost easy. The ability to influence the weak-minded is now a growing skill, becoming more reliable. Telepathic communication through the Force is possible, though not entirely reliable. Familiarity with the subject helps greatly. Range of communication is limited to only a few meters.

Precision with the lightsaber is the most marked improvement at this stage. In a fight, the Padawan will be quite proficient, even against multiple foes. The level of skill here may even rival some Jedi Knights. Before the Padawan can be promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight, they must create their own lightsaber.

Rank 5 Knighthood. The Jedi has advanced to the Jedi rank of Knight. While not a Master of the Force or the Jedi Arts, they are highly skilled in manipulating, controlling, and sensing the Force. Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, Obi Wan Kenobi at the end of Phantom Menace, and Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith would be examples of Jedi of this skill.

When a Jedi is ready for Knighthood, the skills and abilities displayed at Rank 4 will be those available to the Knight. The transition from Padawan to Knight is not one measured in ability gained, but rather in following the Jedi Code and in living life as a Jedi. Attitude, knowledge, and ability to act calmly and rationally mark a Jedi Knight and elevate him or her above the rank of Padawan Learner.

Once a Padawan is promoted to Knight, they are expected to have a certain level of lightsaber skill, and this must be maintained through meditation and training. Once promoted, however, some Knights who show particular proficiency may gain in skill far beyond the standard level of skill.

Rank 6 Mastery. The Jedi Knight has gained Mastery in the Force, and is granted the rank to take other Jedi on as Padawans. While there is still much to learn about the Force, the Jedi is considered to have mastered the ability to sense and manipulate through the Force. Yoda, Mace Windu, Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith would be examples of Jedi Masters.

A Jedi Master's skill with a lightsaber may vary between masters, given the interests and abilities of the Master. While some focus on their skill with the lightsaber and eventually gain a mastery of the weapon, some focus on other aspects of the Force. Though some focus less on their martial skills than others, any Jedi with a lightsaber should still be considered a formidable opponent.
