"Sight-Seeing, Part 2"
By: Xara Q
Location: New Plouton; Thanatos

Xara Q ambled out of the bar with the last few stragglers when it shut down
in the early morning hours. Peering around the New Plouton streets, Xara
paused long enough to get her bearings, then set off in a random direction.
She had a very nice buzz that at least took the weight of her heavy thoughts
off of her shoulders, but she didn't notice the two men who followed her
away from the bar.
Turning down the next street, Xara Q contemplated catching a transport to
the next city. Thanatos suited her usual mode, but she wasn't entirely sure
if she wanted to stay in the same place. Of course, that was all very easy
to consider while her brain was sufficiently addled, but the next turn of
thought brought her back to believing it would simply be too much effort to
re-locate, not to mention the fact that she would be severely out-of-place.
Her musings were interrupted by a tap on her shoulder. Spinning around
sharply, Xara Q over-balanced and had to correct herself before she could
stare up at the two men who had stepped to either side of her.
" 'Ello, beautiful," one of them drawled in an unmistakably liquor-blurred
voice. "Care for a bit 'a fun?"
Xara Q measured the two men up silently as the other one swayed on his feet.
They were both at least a little drunker than she was, but peering around
the street, Xara Q didn't notice any passers-by who looked like they had
taken any interest in the situation. She was on her own.
"Not particularly, gentlemen. If you'll excuse me..." Xara made to step
around the smaller of the two. He seized her around the waist.
"Oh, no you don't, my--"
Her fist connected immediately with the man's jaw. In the next moment, Xara
Q's blaster was in her hand and she spun around to face her other attacker.
However, it took her several seconds to get a bead on him; it was all he
needed. He lunged after her, and the air was knocked from her body as she
sprawled backwards onto the pavement.
Damn, why'd she have to have so many drinks? Xara Q lashed out blindly, and
the man stepped away from her flailing foot. He kicked her savagely in the
ribs, and Xara Q curled instinctively and rolled back across the pavement.
She tried to get her feet under her again, but the man was a little faster.
He threw another punch, and pain exploded in Xara's head; it felt suddenly
as though her brains were attempting to leak out through her ears.
Unable to think of what else to do, Xara lashed out again; this time, her
foot made a lucky connection. She heard the man grunt and drop to his
knees. She didn't waste any time with spinning back to her feet. While she
tried to stabilize herself, the smaller man stared blearily at her,
clutching a hand to his bleeding lip.
Xara Q didn't bother to wait for his reaction. She stepped forward, swept
her blaster off of the ground, and brought it around. Her first shot went
wild, striking the wall behind the man harmlessly. She didn't get a chance
to fire the second; the man still on his feet took off down the street at a
full sprint.
Xara Q looked quickly around the street; people were now turning to stare at
her, and she quickly put her blaster away before she drew too much notice
and strode quickly the other way, leaving the larger man still staggering to
his feet behind her.
Damn, damn, damn! Well, that pretty much decided where she was heading
next. Xara Q set off at a quick pace to the stop where she had gotten off
the last transport and huddled back against the wall, out of the way of the
people still milling about the street.
A few moments later, a troop of what she assumed to be military or police
was rocketing down the street past her, but Xara Q ducked her head and
didn't bother to notice their uniforms. Two minutes later, finally, a
transport stopped and Xara jumped quickly on-board, ducking down in the back
and doing her best to stay out of sight.
The ride back to Thanatos, at least, was uneventful, and the sun had made a
fair distance across the sky as she stepped back off the transport and
headed for the grimy, run-down shack of a building she had taken up
residence in.
That's what I get for staying planet-side, Xara reprimanded herself as she
climbed to the small room she was renting. As soon as she was inside, she
locked the door behind her and slumped down on the bed.
Now that the excitement of the previous night had died away, so had her
buzz...followed by a sharp, stabbing headache that joined the rest of the
aches and pains left over from the fight. Xara could feel her left eye
bulging from where she had been punched, and her ribs felt distinctly
bruised, making it painful to breathe. Still, at the moment, the only thing
she could think of was sleep....
As part of her mind automatically started making plans to look for work in
the morning ("Get the hell out've this dump," Xara muttered aloud), Xara Q
drifted off to sleep, where her dreams were disturbed by images of dark
alleyways and indistinct figures.
"The Evening Wanderings"

Kel stepped out into the evening air from his house in Arcadia, the capital
of this newly liberated planet. Without the Imperial presence, he figured
that soon crime would begin overtaking it, unless the supposed New Republic
would actually do some sort of policing. He smiled slightly at that, knowing
it would take a while for them to get their collective heads out of their
asses in order to do that. Until that time, though, he was certain his
services would come into play to the right bidders. Kel nodded to himself,
and smiled again. By now people knew of his presence on the planet, a
permanent one that is. And people would start coming to him for help in
finding and either eliminating or capturing someone. This would allow him to
resume what he enjoyed doing in life.
For a brief moment, he wondered what Raia was up to. After their encounter,
he was certain he had scared her slightly. But, Kel also had a feeling that
she would be looking for him soon, for one reason or another. Kel continued
walking along, and felt some sprinkles of water fall on his bare arm. Ah, a
summer rain, he thought to himself, noticing the cloud covered sky. After a
few minutes, a gentle rain started falling, but no one really ran for cover,
as the water was slightly warm, and actually felt nice. Kel continued to
walk along, watching the people.
After a little while longer, he ducked into one of the more upscale bars in
the capital region. He walked up to the bar, and was greeted by a voluptuous
bartender, whose dress was obviously made to attract more business and more
tips. Kel smiled to her, and nodded. "Local ale," he said to her.
She smiled, and nodded, her red hair flicking behind her as she went off to
get the customer some ale.
Kel watched her go, then turned and looked at the other patrons in the bar.
Most were engaged in conversations, and he did not notice really any
illicit activity. It was places like here where his high paying customers
would come. He made a mental note of the average amount of money being spent
here, and figured out roughly how much each person made a year. He liked his
rough figures, and from experience, Kel knew that people with money had many
enemies.
"Here you go," the bartender said from behind Kel.
He turned, and smiled to her. "Thanks," Kel said, and paid her
appropriately. He also gave her a wink as she moved off, getting a flirty
smile in return. Kel took a drink from the glass, and nodded his approval of
the drink in his hands. He might come here more often with service like
this.
Kel settled in, and stayed for a while in the bar, watching and drinking.

The sun hung low in the sky out of the bay. It had been a warm day,
hot enough to heat the sands of the beach to where people had been
forced to move in an awkward hopping dance to get from place to
place. At least those without the ability to will away such adverse
effects. Hands clasped behind his back and his mind, heart, and
spirit open to the world around him, Koran Darr's eyes were closed as
he meditated in the waning sunlight, but all of his senses were open.
He was as much a part of this bay as the rocks and trees and water.
He sensed the approach behind him, a beacon in the Force to him.
There was a bond, of sorts, between them, and he sensed her readily
through the ethereal energy. He could not say how many days they had
left together, but he knew there weren't many. Soon she would leave,
and he would turn his entire focus to the Jedi and rebuilding their
order.
"It is moments like this one," he said as she stopped beside the rock
on which he stood, "that I sense the peace won yesterday. Now, it is
time to heal."
"And relax," Laedra Vorrel added with a gentle smile. Although it was
a blazing hot day, a cool breeze still blew in from the ocean to cool
the beach-goers. Laedra's thin, white coverup fluttered to reveal the
swimsuit beneath and tendrils of her loose hair were blown across her
face as the wind swirled around her. She noted fondly how Koran's own
hair swayed, catching the light of the sun and showing red highlights
she'd never noticed before. Laedra chuckled softly. "You haven't even
gone into the water. Why did you choose, then, to come to the coast?"
Koran laughed softly. "There's still time," he said. "Maybe later we
can go out into the water together. Even without going into the
water, it's nice here. There's a peacefulness, even in the Force.
Places such as this, they weren't touched as profoundly by the war."
He turned to regard her. "It's nice to see what can be, rather than
being reminded of what has been."
Laedra sighed and lay her head atop her arms folded upon the rock to
gaze at the crashing waves. "You have an opportunity to change this
world, Koran," she said quietly. "What will you do with such power?"
"I will give Liam the best counsel I can," Koran answered. "As he
explained it, my role there will be to address Jedi matters and to
act as a liaison between Tae'Remok and the Jedi, and then to the rest
of the galaxy as necessary. I will be one voice to him, but my hope
is to be able to lend voice to all the Jedi in this."
Laedra nodded absently, then glanced up at Koran. "And...did he
mention me during your talk?"
"He asked about you, and how you were," Koran answered. "I told him.
He was making his speech today, and then going to go to the Temple.
I'm certain he's there now. He's dealing with his pain as can be
expected, and I sensed no darkness in him, just sadness."
"The Temple?" Laedra stood up straight and regarded Koran with a
mixture of suspicion and disappointment. "You never told me," she
whispered. "Why?"
"Because we are here and the Temple is there," Koran said. He touched
her through the Force and sighed. "He mentioned stopping by here
afterwards, and it was intended to be a surprise. So, when he does
arrive, act surprised."
Laedra smiled ruefully. "I'm sorry. I just...I need to speak with him
one last time, Koran. I need it for closure."
Koran nodded. "I understand," he said. "Tonight you will have your
opportunity. Would you like to go for that swim now? It might be very
nice out there in the water as the sun sets."
Laedra chuckled gently. "A romantic end to a perfect day?"
Koran smiled. "Is it too much?" he asked. "I just thought it might be
nice." He began removing his shirt. "In either case, I believe I will
take that swim now, and I would love your company if you are up for
it."
Smiling broadly, Laedra slipped off her coverup and laid it upon the
rock. "Then you shall have it," she replied, then laughed and dashed
off towards the water.
With a laugh, Koran tossed his shirt aside and raced after her,
content to enjoy the night here with Laedra as much as he could, and
as much as her moods would allow. Tonight would be for them...at
least until Liam arrived.

"I-I hear something," Orinth Neerou, standing with Tralesha outside
the Temple, said anxiously. "Is that a speeder approaching?"
Tralesha listened intently on the approaching sound. After a moment,
she nodded. "It is, and it's coming in very fast. Do you think it's
him this time? It's going too fast for anyone but a Jedi to be
piloting." She grinned and looked at Orinth. "It's him, I know it
is." She slipped her hand into his. "Come on, let's go." It was only
about ten meters between where they stood and where the speeders were
kept, but Tralesha's excitement was nearly bubbling over.
Hanging onto Tralesha's arm for support, Orinth walked forward to
meet the incoming speeders. "My Yelara," he mused sadly. "Do you
think he's brought her with him?"
Tralesha wasn't certain if she'd actually stumbled, but it certainly
felt as if her mind had. "I don't know," she said. "Perhaps...perhaps
he has."
Orinth smiled and patted her hand. "I do so want you to meet her,
after all. You would love her, Tralesha."
"I am certain I would," she said softly.
Before any more could be said, the speeder rounded the bend and burst
into view. Within were several people, including Yara and Shaza.
Tralesha glanced at Orinth and was proud of the strength and resolve
that burned in his still-bright, still-alive eyes.
"Is Leshie with them?" Orinth muttered, searching the inside of the
vehicle. "There's Liam.... He looks strong and brave. He's a good
man."
"I can't see," Tralesha answered. "Maybe he's with Yara. She's there.
Do you see her? She's sitting with that other young man. Do you see?"
The speeder veered smoothly to the right and came to a halt beside
the other speeder parked in the clearing. Orinth smiled at Tralesha.
"They've arrived."
One of the hatches was opened and out came Yara, wearing another
comely dress that had once belonged to Yelara. In her arms was
Leshie, kicking happily and smiling grandly. Yara kissed his brow and
whispered something unheard to the child. He bounced even more
excitedly.
"He knows I'm here," Orinth told Tralesha. "I feel it."
"He does," Tralesha said. "Look how he's looking around. He's...oh,
he's looking over here!" At the shrill, burbling squeal he let out,
she laughed. "Oh, I think he's seen you."
"Mr. Neerou," Yara called out, then waved at him and hurried forward.
When she was near, Leshie had almost wriggled free of her embrace,
but Orinth was there to take the child into his own arms. He calmed
immediately and cooed at his grandfather. "My boy," Orinth whispered,
tearful with joy and sorrow. "Your mother was so proud of you."
Liam stepped out of the speeder and approached slowly, giving Leshie
and his great grandfather the time they needed together. He felt the
emotions he'd been keeping inside, bottled as tightly as his training
would allow, stirring once more. He took a deep breath and used the
Force to calm himself, a task that was proving arduously difficult.
Orinth met Liam's gaze, recognizing the hidden pain there he himself
still held in his own eyes. He nodded in greeting to the man, then
abandoned all formality, and smiled. "My son," he whispered.
Liam smiled and his resolve shattered. Tears slipped from both eyes
and trailed down his cheeks. "She was so very brave," he said softly.
"She tried to save me, to stop Dargus." His voice cracked and he had
to force back the wracking sob that wanted to break free. "She's at
the palace, in stasis. She's...it was too early, but...but if she
hadn't, he would have... She saved me, and saved everyone in the
process." He moved closer and reached out to his son and Orinth.
"Father." A smile curled his lips upward and he laughed. "She's still
with us, through the Force. I can feel her."
"She's in Leshie," Orinth told him weakly as his voice began to
quaver. "And in the end, she was free. She saw through Dargus...and
knew she loved you." His eyes grew awash with tears, and his old,
weathered face formed far more lines when he sobbed. "You're the only
family I have now."
Liam reached out and took Orinth and Leshie into his arms and held
him close. "We have each other," he said. "Leshie needs us, and...and
we have Yara and Va'Lesh. Dargus cloned them from the babies, but
they're them, all grown up. We have them, and we can all be a
family."
Orinth dismissed the revelation for reflection at a later time, one
when he was far less emotionally affected than he was at that moment.
Instead he released one arm from its hold on Leshie and returned
Liam's embrace. "She'll never be gone, I won't allow it. She'll live
through us, my children."
There was a gentle touch on Orinth's shoulder as Tralesha stepped
closer. She gave him a loving smile, and nodded her encouragement.
"Ah, my girl..." Orinth chuckled tearfully and pulled back to present
her to Liam. "Tralesha Zibel. She's been of great comfort to me. I
know Yelara would have adored her."
Liam chuckled and looked at the young woman standing protectively at
Orinth's side. She gave him a smile and glanced over at where Shaza
was approaching. She reached in and placed her hand over Orinth's.
"We're all here for you in this," she said. "I know nothing can bring
Yelara back, but we have each other and we have our memories." She
smiled and looked up at Liam. "From what you've said, and seeing
everything here, I feel that there's a part of my life that's empty
because I never met her."
Liam chuckled. "That's only because I talk too much," he said.
Shaza grinned. "And, I don't?" At Liam's glance at Tralesha, she
blushed. "We spent a long time talking last night. Actually, we were
still talking when the sun came up."
"Sometimes, having someone to talk to in times like this is the best
thing that can happen. A bottle of Corellian Whiskey helps too."
Shaza laughed and placed a hand on Liam's shoulder. "You're horrible.
But, it's an endearing quality."
Liam smiled and held her gaze for a long moment before nodding. "Yes,
I am, aren't I?" He turned to Orinth. "Would you like to go inside?
We can get Leshie some food and maybe some drinks for ourselves,
and...and we can remember Yelara." He looked at Shaza. "And for those
who never met her, we can introduce her."
Orinth sighed and nodded wanly. "We shall celebrate her bravery and
life, and the love she had for us all." He kissed Leshie's forehead,
and with Tralesha's support again, they started at a leisurely pace
back towards the Temple, to reminisce and remember, and to make
certain Yelara's memory never perished, even though her physical
being had.

"Repairs are progressing well," Rilanna said as she met with Reza on
the skybridge overlooking the main operations deck. "Air scrubbers
are all now working above eighty-five percent efficiency and security
teams are running into less resistance. I'd say we'll only need ten
more days like this, and we can officially declare ourselves back in
full operation."
Reza nodded absently and sighed as she turned to leaned her back
against the rail. She glanced aside at Rilanna and smiled wanly.
"What if I don't want to return to this life? What if I want to
escape again and just travel the galaxy with you? Hm?"
"My ship's ready and waiting," Rilanna answered with a grin. "All we
have to do is climb inside and go. We'll just pick a direction and
go, and just explore." She allowed her hand to brush over Reza's, a
touch that managed to carry her feelings with it. "How's that sound?"
Reza moaned happily, then chuckled at her friend. "Of course it
sounds wonderful...but we can't exactly do that, now can we? There
are people depending on us."
"Yes," Ril answered. "Maybe we can train people to take over for us,
and in a few months..." She grinned. "A nice thought. Though, we'd
have to convince Dresh to come with us when we go."
"He'll be busy," she replied with a note of disappointment. "He's
heading some project on one of Tae'Karada's moons." Reza chuckled
wryly and turned back to face the promenade below. "Life was so
simple on Riga. Will there even be time for anything here?"
Rilanna pressed her hand to Reza's back and brushed her fingers
sensuously against her shoulder. "Oh, I'm sure if we want to we can
make that time, don't you? If we want it bad enough, we'll make it a
priority."
"But however will you fit me into your schedule when much of your
time is spent with Lerrah and her woman?" Reza teased, glancing back
at her friend.
"You will take note that I am here with you right now," Rilanna said
with a grin, "rather than down in Lerrah's quarters. I should hope
that is evidence enough where I would rather be."
Reza chuckled and lay her hand upon Rilanna's resting on her
shoulder. "At this hour, yes.... But, we can discuss all this when
the station is up and running completely. I imagine there will be
time..."
"Just think of all the time we'll have when we don't have to oversee
every little detail," Ril said. "I think we'll have quite a bit of
time for...tasting wines, and sampling cuisine, and putting that chef
of yours through the tests."
"And discovering just what this relationship of ours is all
about...." Reza flashed Rilanna a tender smile, then shifted around
again to face her, but this time she slipped her arms around Ril's
waist. "I do love you, Rilanna," she told her forthrightly. "You no
longer doubt that, do you?"
"No," Rilanna said with a smile as she slipped her arms around Reza.
"Not any more. I don't know exactly what we do have, but I know that
it is love. And, I know that when I'm with you, I'm happy."
Reza smiled with wonder. "And I am with you...and Dresh...." She
laughed to herself, shaking her head. "I'm getting weak, aren't I?"
"I wouldn't call it weak," another voice answered. "Just overly
sentimental toward those for whom you care."
Reza glanced aside at Dresh, needing only his voice to betray his
identity. She reached out a hand to him, but didn't detach from
Rilanna. "And when did overly sentimental become any different from
weak, Captain?"
"It's only a weakness when overly sentimental feelings are attached
to all things. Those you love are exempt."
When his hand touched hers, a flood of joy went through Reza, and she
guided him closer. "So, if it is not a weakness to love you both,
then what is it?"
"More love than most people get in their lifetime," he answered.
"There's no such thing as too much love, especially from those you
love in return."
Reza smiled. "So insightful...." She leaned in towards him for a
light kiss, then, so as not to neglect Rilanna, she did the same to
her. "Things are looking brighter," she commented, passing her gaze
between the two of them. "It was always so dark...but not now, not
ever again."
"When you get a chance," Dresh said with a grin, "you might want to
check through your messages. We may end up seeing more of each other
than we'd planned."
Reza lifted an eyebrow at him. "Oh? Have you made some special
arrangements I should know about?"
Dresh laughed. "I haven't, but it appears that you and I have been
requested, by the new High Prince Regent of Tae'Karada, to act in an
advisory capacity within the new government. You as the administrator
of this station, and me as a representative of the New Republic."
Reza's eyes grew wide with surprise, and she chuckled lowly. "They've
given me a voice in the government?" she asked, quite amused. "This
Regent is quite mad, isn't he?"
Dresh laughed. "He's a Jedi Knight," he said. "And, it's actually an
intelligent move, to bring in all the elements of the planet and to
try to unify everyone. From what I've heard, it'll be quite a change
from before. I've heard he's also going to alter some of Tae'Karada's
social practices." He glanced at Rilanna. "I'm sorry to say that the
equadi will no longer be the standard style of dress down there."
Rilanna chuckled. "As long as they're not outlawing them completely,
I may still get to wear one for Reze."
Reza grinned at her girl. "There's always the privacy of our own
quarters...." She kissed her lightly, then looked aside at Dresh with
a note of rue. "You have to go now, don't you?"
"I do," he answered with a sigh. "But I'll be back as soon as I can.
Maybe day after tomorrow if things work out. I'll comm you when I get
there, provided the local HoloNet connection is up."
"We'll find a way," she assured him, as well as herself. After
slipping away from Rilanna, she wrapped her arms around Dresh's waist
and held him in silence for a time. She took in the scent of his
clothing as her cheek rested against his chest and traced the
contours of his back with her fingers lightly. "I'll miss you," she
whispered.
"I'll miss you too," Dresh answered. "We'll do everything we can to
make the separation bearable, and all the time we can manage
together, we will."
"You'd better make this work," she threatened playfully, "or Rilanna
here will have to comfort me. You might just become superfluous."
"Well, I've got something she doesn't have," Dresh said with a grin.
"Though, she does have breasts, and I think they win in almost every
case. Don't worry, I'll make this work."
"I know," she replied sincerely. Cradling one side of his face in her
hand, Reza reached up and kissed Dresh amorously. "Fly safely," she
whispered.
"I will," Dresh answered. "And, make sure you don't get too close to
Ril; I don't want to have to fight too hard to win you back." He
glanced over at Ril and chuckled. "But, if you're up for it, give her
enough to keep her as interested as you want her to be."
"Oh, I can definitely manage that," Reza replied with a suggestive
grin. "Now...go on. The sooner you leave, the sooner you return to
me."
"In that case," Dresh said, "I'm gone." He kissed her with longing,
and finally had to pull away. "I'll miss you, Shrezade, and I'll come
back soon."
Reza nodded and watched Dresh go with a wistful smile. "I love that
man," she sighed.
Rilanna's arms slipped around Reza's waist and she held herself
close. "I know," she said. "The two of you are good together, Reza.
And, he loves you. It's wonderful to see the two of you so happy."
Reza kissed Rilanna's cheek fondly and corrected, "The three of us."
Ril grinned and brushed her lips against Reza's. "The three of us. I
love you, Reze."
"Then let's go to my room," she murmured against Rilanna's lips, "and
you can show me just how much."
"Gladly," Rilanna whispered, and together they left the observation
deck and made their way to Reza's room.

"It's perfect." Yannick grinned, proud of his own good taste. "I
mean...it's got a roof, doesn't it? And besides, we only need it for
meetings, that sort of thing." He glanced aside at his friend, his
brother, still appraising the housing structure. "So...what do you
say?"
Pack crossed his arms over his chest and shifted his weight to the
side. He recrossed his arms, shifted to the other side, and then
cocked his head toward the other side. Finally after rubbing his chin
for a moment, he grinned. "It's perfect."
Yannick clapped his friend on the back, then emitted a whooping
cheer. "I'll have the boys move our stuff in! Starting with the table
and chairs, so we can have our first ever meeting on the
reconstruction efforts. We've gotta make this desert a place where
our brethren will be proud to live."
"And a place we'll be proud to call home," Pack answered. "It's going
to be great, Yan. You, me, and...all of this. It'll be perfect. And,
when we're done with all this, maybe we'll be recognized as a
legitimate territory, and not just a hangout for thieves and
cutthroats."
"I hear they got themselves a new leader," Yannick mentioned. "Maybe
one day, we can get ourselves over there and have a chat with the
fellow. It's about time this planet's leaders paid a little more
attention to us."
"And, I imagine about time we started paying attention to life
outside of our little home here," Pack said. "It's time to become
responsible."
Yannick nodded slowly as he slung his arm across Pack's shoulders,
and studied their new headquarters. "I thought we were, Pack. We're
not killing each other, are we?"
"No," Pack said with a wide smile, "no we're not. We're looking out
for each other, and now we've got to look out for others too. There
are more than kir'thana here, and we can't ignore the rest."
"Anyone living on these sands, fighting by our side just to
survive...they are kir'thana, Pack."
"What about the ones in the cities? Do they count as on these sands?
They're on Tae'Karada, they have at least been accepted by Thana."
"And maybe when they acknowledge our existence," Yannick said calmly,
"we can call them 'brother' too."
Pack grinned. "That's a day to look forward to," he said. "Brother."
Yannick chuckled and shook his head as he patted Pack's back. "But
before that, what do you say we set up our council chambers?" He shot
Pack a lopsided grin, then winked. "We're politicians now."
"Politicians it is then," Pack said. "I have an idea about the main
chamber. They have these things now called holograms, and I was
thinking..." And, so the two new leaders of Thanatos set off to
prepare for their futures and to set right all the wrongs that had
come before them.

As the streaking stars converged again into tiny specks upon their
reversion to lightspeed, Kaysa felt her anticipation growing
stronger. She smiled at the woman beside her, flying the ship that
would bring her to a place where she could contact her loved ones,
and brushed a hand along her arm. "Thank you for doing this with me,
Kal."
Kallia smiled at Kaysa and nodded. "Of course," she said. "It's the
least I could do for my best friend, and I know they will want to
know that you're safe. Probably about as much as you want to know
they're safe. We'll be on the ground in just a few minutes."
Kaysa sighed and felt the ship lean to the left as Kallia turned it
towards the moon. After a moment's pause, she chuckled softly. "Keeve
was angrier than I've ever seen him. He thinks we're off to have sex
again."
Kallia smiled. "He may be right," she said. "But, we can explain it
to him later, if you'd like. I think, if the five of us are going to
be living out here for awhile yet, we need to find a way to make
peace with him. Our division is only going to hurt us if anyone ever
does find us out here."
"I don't know," Kaysa said slowly. "I think if it came to it, he'd
protect us. Shiv would despise him if he didn't."
"It'd be easier if we all got along," Kallia said.
"Well, most of us do." She smiled suggestively at Kal. "And I think
he's too interested in Shiv right now to bother with us." With a hint
of rue, Kaysa added, "As is Shiv."
Kallia grinned. "Well, maybe we should try to get Shiv to pay some
attention to us. Maybe Keeve would pay attention to us too then."
Kaysa shrugged. "I'm enjoying your company. The rest is not such a
loss."
"I'm enjoying spending my time with you," Kallia said as she reached
over and covered Kaysa's hand with her own. "We'll be setting down
right over there. Comm terminal's just right on that corner there."
"And we'll have a secure transmission?" Kaysa asked with slight
concern.
"Secure as is technically possible," Kallia answered as the ship
swung around and started sinking toward the waiting berth below.
"Don't worry; even if they do trace the signal, it'll lead them here,
not to where we actually are."
"We'll be quick," Kaysa assured her. "I just...I need to hear their
voices, that's all."
The ship settled to the ground, and Kallia started putting all the
systems into Standby Mode. After a few minutes, she looked to Kaysa
and nodded. "Done," she said. "Did you want me to come with you?"
Kaysa smiled and took her friend's hand. "Of course. I can even
introduce you. Though we'll keep that fling thing our secret, right?"
"What fling thing?" Kallia asked with a laugh. "And, it'll be nice to
be formally introduced. Keeve wasn't very good at that sort of
thing."
"He's not very good at a lot," Kaysa amended. She rose from her seat
and motioned for Kallia to lead the way. "My protector..."
"Unless you're Maeren and need protecting," Kallia answered as they
headed toward the ramp. "He's good, but if he truly wants to be an
effective protector, he'll need to learn patience."
"He'll learn," Kaysa told her with a sage smile. "Time is what he
needs... It fixes everything, you know."
"Wise words," Kallia said with a smile. "You should have been a
Jedi."
"I once met a Jedi," she recalled. "The bluest eyes I'd ever seen..."
She chuckled at the memory. "Dragged me kicking and screaming to Zale
so we could reconcile. We did."
Something within Kallia stirred, bringing a smile to her lips.
"Liam," she whispered. "It was Liam." Her features sank and she
sighed. "I hurt him, but I didn't know it. He didn't deserve that,
not for what he did. I...I hope he'll be alright. He has beautiful
eyes, just like his son."
"He was a kind man." Kaysa slipped her arm around Kallia's waist in a
half-embrace. "You'll see everyone again, Kal."
Upon reaching the hatch that opened onto the ramp, Kaysa and Kal
started down it, with Kallia poised to defend them both if required.
As they walked in silence, Kaysa glanced aside at Kallia. "Should I
tell them?" At Kallia's questioning frown, Kaysa explained. "About my
pregnancy... Should I tell them?"
Kallia thought about it for a moment, then she shook her head. "No,"
she finally said. "No, keep it as a surprise for them, I think. It'll
be a nice surprise for them when we return."
Kaysa let out a deep breath that became a laugh. "One large surprise
depending on how far along I am when I return."
Kallia brushed a hand over her own belly. "I imagine I'll be pretty
far along as well."
"Far along with what?" Kaysa asked her uncertainly. "Kal...are you
not telling me something?"
"I'm pregnant as well," Kallia answered. "Yara's going to have a
brother or sister."
Kaysa's lips curled into a curious smile. "When did this happen? And
by who?"
"I'm not certain," Kallia answered. "The details...they're...well,
it's as you can imagine. I don't believe the father was Dargus
Kandran, but I know he would like me to think so."
"So...Keeve then?" Kaysa ventured tentatively.
"Most likely," Kallia answered. "But...but I'm not certain. When the
baby is born, I'll have to have a test run to know for certain. I
feel so terrible...not knowing."
Kaysa smiled warmly and wrapped an arm around Kallia's shoulders for
comfort. "It'll be a surprise, though. And will it matter, Kal? She
or he will have you...and me. They'll have all the love they could
ever want."
Kallia smiled and nodded. "Yes," she said with a smile. "It doesn't
matter who the father was, not when he or she will have us."
Both women shared a tender kiss, then focused on getting to the comm
station. Although she had attempted to convince Kallia she could
raise a child without a man, Kaysa didn't relish doing the same
again. She wanted Zale and Merrick to raise her child, no matter
whose it really was, though she suspected Zale was going to get the
child with hair like his own in a few months. Kaysa sighed fondly at
that.
The comm station was set up in a series of booths, and Kallia and
Kaysa picked one. They slipped inside together and were thankful
there was enough room for them both to comfortably sit before the
holographic terminal. Kallia turned to Kaysa and grinned. "I imagine
they're going to be so very surprised to hear from you."
"And nervous that I've caught them doing something they shouldn't,"
she quipped. Kaysa began punching the coordinates into the console
and glanced aside at Kal. "We're secure?"
Kallia checked the settings and after a moment of study, nodded.
"Secure," she said.
Kaysa exhaled deeply, then squeezed Kallia's hand for support. The
display remained dark, save for the words: "Searching for
Coordinates" floating in the center of the black background. It
seemed an interminable length of time they waited, and Kaysa's
anxieties were piqued. "Something's happened," she murmured. "Why
isn't he answering?"
"Perhaps he's not there," Kallia suggested. "What if they've gone out
or are at the club or the office?"
"Maybe..." she answered. "But why wouldn't they forward their calls
to their wristcomms?" Kaysa shook her head. "I don't know,
Kal...something doesn't feel right."
Kallia reached out through the Force and sensed something dark and
foreboding. She frowned and looked at Kaysa. "Is there anyone else
you might be able to contact? Someone who might know?"
Kaysa's mind immediately went to the one other person on Tae'Karada
she knew and trusted. She punched in Moril's private frequency and
waited impatiently. If he didn't reply, there was definitely
something wrong.
A moment later, the image on the screen switched to Moril's
disheveled image. "Kaysa," he said immediately. A look of concern
flashed in his eyes, but he tamped it down immediately. A moment
later, he let the mask fall away completely. "You tried to contact
Zale?"
"Yes." She leaned forward, her face nearly pressing to the screen.
"Moril...where is he?"
Moril was silent for a moment, his inner debate clear, finally he
sighed. "I don't know. I received a message from him the other day.
It appears those two Dark Jedi girls got to them. We're narrowing
down the location and we'll be ready to strike soon, but given their
disposition and power I expect to lose sixty-five percent of our
people in the operation. But, I believe we have a seventy-five
percent chance of getting Zale and Merrick back."
"Merrick," Kaysa gasped. "Oh gods...Moril, what are you saying?" Fear
gripped her heart and crushed it. Tears were forced to her eyes and
soon began to fall, but Kaysa remained strong. "Moril...go to the
Jedi. Find Liam Zaneth! He'll help." She paused to blink away the
salty, burning tears flooding her eyes, the focused on the image of
Zale's assistant with fierce determination. "I'm coming home."
"Kaysa! That's...that's a bad idea! That's what they want...that's
what they're waiting for." Moril's eyes were pleading as he tried to
get her to listen to him, to break through the panic. "They're just
waiting for you to step onto this planet, so they can grab you.
Kaysa, no. We'll plan this out together."
"How long have they been missing?" she asked accusatorially. "How
long have you been planning, Moril! They almost killed us the last
time we encountered them. What makes you think they will keep them
alive for even a moment longer than necessary!"
"You won't like my answer to that," Moril answered. "But, I'm quite
certain they'll find a reason to keep them alive. It's only been a
few days, Kaysa. We've narrowed it down to a two kilometer radius,
and we're still working at it. All I can ask is that you trust me,
Kaysa. And, I'll try to contact the Jedi as soon as I can. That Liam
Zaneth guy is now the High Prince Regent on Tae'Karada. The New
Republic came in, and...and Tarkin's gone. Kandran's dead."
Kaysa looked aside at Kallia, seeing her own surprise in her friend's
features. She then faced Moril again. "What about Qual and Neron? If
Kandran's gone and the Imps, why can't I return, Moril?"
"Qual and Neron have those two Dark Jedi; they'll descend on you.
Kaysa, you can't risk it. They also want Maeren. Please, Kaysa, just
stay there. I'll contact you soon with information. We'll get them
back, Kaysa, I promise."
She sighed and lowered her forehead to the screen. With eyes closed,
she squeezed out the last of her tears, and sought composure. "How
will I know when everything's safe?" she whispered. "Moril...I can't
bear to be in the dark about this. I have to know."
"I'll get all the information I can to you," Moril said. "If you can
set up a secure facility wherever you are, I can encrypt a burst
transfer for you, send it out daily, twice daily. I won't keep you in
the dark, Kaysa; I'll tell you everything. But...but it'll only make
things more difficult if you return, because you're their real
target...you and Maeren."
"I don't care," Kaysa whispered. And she would not have truly if
there weren't another being growing within her. She sighed and sat
back to regard Moril fully. "I'll remain here. I promise, Moril.
Just...keep me updated as much as you can. Use the Stiletto's
frequency."
"I will," Moril answered. "But, you'll need to be careful out there.
With me sending transmissions, the chances that they could be
traced... If I tell you to go, do so. Without hesitation. Alright?"
Kaysa swallowed hard and nodded unsteadily. "I trust you, Moril. I'll
do what you tell me to."
Moril gave her a smile of encouragement. "We'll get them back," he
said. "And, when we do, I'm sending them to you, Kaysa. I promise."
"Thanks," she whispered, then pressed a kiss to her fingers, and onto
Moril's lips displayed on-screen. "Be careful back there, and I
promise to as well."
"Good," Moril said with a grin. "And, give that kid of yours a kick
in the rump and tell him Moril says hi. I'll talk to you soon,
Kaysa."
"See you soon, Moril." Then she cut the connection and collapsed
against Kallia with a thick sob.
Kallia slipped her arms around Kaysa and held her close. "I'm so
sorry, Kaysa," she whispered, the pain in her voice evidence of the
pain she felt for her friend. "I don't know what we can do, but...but
we'll have to...just wait. I'd say I know a way to pass the time,
but..." She shook her head and laughed. "Never thought I wouldn't be
in the mood." She felt a tear slip down her cheek, but she fought
against her emotions, to keep from breaking down. One of them would
need to be strong now.
"They can't die," Kaysa rasped. "I won't have my child grow up
without a father, not again!"
"They won't," Kallia answered with a firmness in her voice that leant
certainty to her words. "They'll survive and your baby will have a
father. The Force is on our side, Kaysa, and it will see us through
this."
Kaysa nodded sullenly and held Kallia tighter. The Force may have
been on their side, but it seemed the entire universe was against
them. But despite the sorrow and heartbreaks likely to come, at least
with Kallia, she wouldn't be alone.

Maeren Shivral looked up from the little puff of white fur wrestling
a ball of string between her outstretched legs. Hope let out a
mewling growl as she pounced on the string once more, drawing out
laughs at her ferocity that was more cute than anything else. Shiv
reached out and grabbed one end of the string and pulled it. Hope's
fuzzy head snapped around to glare at the offending hand. She meowed
and leapt forward, latching herself into Shiv's arm.
"She's so cute," the young voice across from Shiv said. It was a face
so very much like her own so many years ago. Not that her face was
much different now, except for the modifications given to her by
Nieme and Dani. She smiled. It was good to see a friendly face from
her past, a face that she'd grown up with. The face also reminded her
of Lerrah, another native to Agarra.
"I'm just glad that she knows we're playing because her teeth are
sharp." As if on cue, Hope looked up, suddenly not interested in
Shiv's hand, and meowed. "Oh, now you're hungry, is it?" The sound of
the door opening brought all of their attention around where Keeve
appeared in the door. Shiv grinned. "You get it working?" she asked.
"Oh, Keeve, this is Zari. She's one of my friends from when I was
growing up here."
Keeve, wary of everyone nowadays, studied the girl intently. She was
of a thin, undeveloped build, but her youthful face already held a
feminine beauty that would only grow more appealing as she matured.
He smiled flatly at the girl, who seemed far too young to have ever
known Shiv, but who held the same bright smile his wife always
favoured him with; it was difficult not to instantly like the girl.
"Nice to meet you, Zari," he said as he made his way over. He
crouched down between the two seated on the floor and ruffled the fur
on Hope's head as he greeted the kitten. "Is this what you two have
been doing all day?"
"We were climbing earlier," Zari offered. "There's a great climbing
tree just over past the amphitheatre. You can go up so high you can
nearly touch the stars."
"Zari is Agarra's expert climber of everything climbable."
Keeve grinned at Shiv as his fingers brushed against hers while they
both stroked Hope's back. "I thought that was you, Maeren. You saying
she's far better in a tree than you are?"
"Well, it depends on what you're doing in a tree, silly," she said,
then gasped. "Oh, I can't say that in front of her." Zari giggled.
"I know about that," Zari said. "The way you and Lerrah were, I got a
bigger education than momma could ever give me."
Shiv gave the girl a stern look. "You haven't...you know, have you?"
Zari's expression changed to one of shock. "Eww?"
Shiv giggled. "Good." She looked at Keeve and shook her head. "Kids
these days."
"Not for long if she associates with you much longer," Keeve quipped
lovingly. He leaned forward and kissed Shiv's brow, then rose and
walked past her towards the kitchen. "Did Kaysa or Kallia comm you
yet?"
"They're on their way back," Shiv said, then frowned. "I'm worried,
Keeve. They didn't say anything, but...there was something. It was in
her eyes. She'd been crying, I could tell, but there was something
more."
"Well, how are we supposed to know what?" he replied acridly. "They
refused to tell us where they were going and for what; is it our
fault that things didn't go so well?" He reached into the
refrigeration unit and pulled out a bottle of chilled juice. "Don't
let it bother you, Maeren. It's their own doing."
Shiv shook her head. "How can you be so cold about them?" she asked.
"Gods, Keeve. What do you expect them to do here? Kallia has no one,
and Zale and Merrick are on Tae'Karada. I think it's fine that
they've found each other and they can spend time together. They need
something to take their minds off...things."
"What things?" He took a pull from the bottle, then gesticulated
towards her with it. "You know she's doing this to spite you. She's
upset that she hasn't been with you for almost a week. Now, she's
gone to Kallia for satisfaction. Doesn't that bother you?"
"That's not why she's doing it," Shiv answered hotly. "She's doing it
because I'm not here for her and she needs someone. She has
absolutely no one here, Keeve. No one, not even me."
"And whose fault is that?" he shot back. "If you aren't going to be
with her anymore, the least you can do is let her down gently instead
of leading her on. After all we've been through, that's the one thing
you should know."
"Do you think I don't want to be with her anymore? What I don't want
is for you to become any more of an ass than you already are about
things like this. I know how you would act if I go to her bed, Keeve.
I can't just stop loving her; I won't. And, every jab and snipe you
take at her, it tears out a piece of my heart. I doubt you even care
though."
Keeve set the bottle down heavily upon the counter and glared. "I do
care... About you! She's doing this to hurt you, Maeren, and I
won't let her."
"She is not doing this to hurt me, Keeve," Shiv said, her voice
lowering to a near snarl. "She is doing this because everyone she
loves has basically abandoned her. She is with Kallia because she
needs someone. I'm happy that she's with Kallia, alright? I'm happy
that she has someone to turn to when I let her down, when I'm the
one who's not there for her. If you weren't such a jealous and
spiteful person, maybe you'd see that. And, if you think that you're
protecting me by hurting her, you need to open your eyes. You hurt
her, you hurt me." She lowered her voice to a dangerous tone, tears
brimming in her eyes. "And, I won't let that happen, Keeve."
Keeve sighed and threw up his hands. "Fine. I'm the evil, vicious
little shit trying to tear everyone apart." He stormed past her with
a growl. "Fine! If you can't see that I'm trying to protect you, then
what the hell am I good for!" He halted as an afterthought beside
Zari. "Nice meeting you," then he continued for the door.
Zari started to wave, but Shiv quickly came steaming after Keeve.
"Keeve, don't you dare walk away from me! And, don't you dare put
words into my mouth. I don't need to be protected from Kaysa,
alright? I need to be protected from people like Zale's brothers and
Nieme and Dani. I don't need you to protect me from the people I
love." Her features softened. "Okay?"
Keeve had stopped at the door, heeding Shiv's initial demand. Now,
hearing the sorrow in her voice, he was glad he hadn't made it into
the hallway. Sighing, he turned back towards her and smiled wanly.
"Okay," he replied grudgingly. "I just don't want to see you upset."
Shiv sighed and nodded to him. "Thank you," she whispered. "I love
you very much, Keeve. I get so scared when we fight because we're
both too stubborn, and...and you hate everyone and everything that
isn't me. I'm yours and I always will be. You can like other people,
you know. You can make friends and like people who aren't me."
Keeve grinned and motioned his eyes towards Zari. "I sorta like the
kid. She's 'other people' isn't she?"
Shiv glanced back at Zari and smiled. "She is," she said. "Wanna come
help us keep Hope entertained? I'm certain we could use your help?
She's a real bundle of energy, you know."
Keeve chuckled and moved forward to slip his arms around Shiv's
waist. "I know someone else who's a bundle of energy," he said slyly,
and pushed his hands over her rear.
"Hey," she said with a giggle. "Careful. She is actually innocent.
Though, we could slip into the bedroom while she watches Hope."
Keeve glanced aside at the young girl, oblivious to their lustful
actions, then smiled slowly at Shiv. "Not so loud though. Don't want
to frighten her, right?"
"We can be quiet," Shiv said with a whisper. "Sure we can. Of course
we can. We were quiet before...right? It was two minutes even. We can
do this, Keeve!" She reached out and grabbed his hand while giving
him a seductive smile.
While Zari watched the two rush towards the bedrooms, the front door
slid open and in progressed Kaysa and Kallia, both appearing
crestfallen. Keeve was the first to glance back, and the sneer for
Kaysa he'd intended became a questioning frown after one look at her,
leaning heavily against Kallia and trembling with suppressed tears.
He pulled Shiv to a stop, continuing to stare at Kaysa.
Shiv turned to the two at the door, her eyes locked with Kaysa's and
she knew the pain there. Something had happened, something bad. She
shook her head and started forward. "No," she whispered, as she
folded herself into Kaysa's embrace with Keeve doing his best to lend
them support.
Kallia felt diminished, broken. They had left Tae'Karada for
protection, and the problems they had sought to avoid had still risen
up and struck for the heart. They would need to rely on Moril and the
help he could muster. Until then, she would be whatever comfort she
could to Kaysa and the others.
She was about to reach out to Maeren when Zari's presence caught her
attention. She shifted her gaze to the girl and lifted an eyebrow.
She felt her hope bolstered slightly and a hint of a smile played
across her lips. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, as she gazed at the
young girl who seemed to radiate with hidden power, a little ball of
white raced forward and bounced against her ankle. Kallia looked down
into the blue-eyed gaze meowing up at her. "Hope," she whispered, and
felt her own spirits bolstered.
***
Perched atop the same rock Koran had chosen as his meditation spot
earlier, Laedra remained curled up against him with her head leaning
on his shoulder as the two focused on the setting sun. Its orange
glow cast a corona of a similar pastel shade onto the rippling waters
at the horizon. As the sun dipped lower, submerging itself within the
ocean, Laedra clutched at Koran's robes and willed the sphere to
halt. It would be the last sunset she and Koran would experience
together for a long while - she had no idea how long, yet - and she
had no desire to see it end.
"It's beautiful," she whispered.
Koran brushed a hand along her arm and smiled. "It is," he said. "To
be out here, in the natural world, experiencing wonders that cannot
exist outside of this. It helps put things in perspective, but it
gives you a sense of hope that if there can be something that
beautiful, that amazing, not all hope is lost."
Laedra nodded pensively. "As you have hopes of rebuilding the Jedi?
Have you decided whether you will use the Ancients' teachings?"
"I will try to incorporate what knowledge they gave us with the Jedi
teachings, and hopefully come up with something new for this new era.
There will be a new batch of Jedi Masters, Liam among them. Kael will
be given his trials, and if he passes he will be raised to Knight. I
am hoping that with Liam's influence in the government, additional
resources for training can be gained. I believe that together he and
Raeila may be a good troubleshooting team. They could travel and get
a feel for things, I think it would also help them grow beyond their
desert beginnings." He turned and regarded her. "Aurra may be ready
for testing soon as well." He took Laedra's hand and brought it to
his lips. "When you return to us, if you decide to be a Jedi again, I
see no reason why you couldn't be a Jedi Master, especially after the
battle at the Temple."
"That was one experience," she told him ruefully. "Hardly enough to
make a Jedi Master." She smiled at him curiously. "You're so certain
I will return in due time?"
"Not so certain," Koran said. "It's a hope, but this is a path you
have to walk, and I will let you walk it. If your path happens to
lead you back here, then the Jedi Order will be happy to have you
among us once more. If not, I hope we can always count on you as an
ally and friend." He smiled and brushed his lips against her cheek.
"Me especially."
Laedra turned her face towards his and allowed Koran's lips to find
her own briefly. "You'll see me again," she murmured. "No matter
what."
There was a slight pause, and then Koran smiled. "I know," he
whispered. As he kissed her again, the sound of an approaching
speeder could be heard. He looked toward it and nodded. "That would
be Liam," he said.
Laedra's heart leapt with anxiety and she pulled away from Koran to
let out a deep breath. "What if he hates me?"
Koran smiled. "What if he doesn't?" he replied. "Don't worry about
what may be, go find out what is. I'll wait here for you."
"You're not coming?" she asked worriedly. Recognizing her own
cowardice, Laedra sighed and steeled her resolve by searching the
Force for strength. It provided. "I won't be long." She kissed
Koran tenderly, then slipped off the rock and started down the beach.
She felt Liam the closer she drew, and detected a sorrow he was
successfully controlling. Laedra's guilt responded; she was
responsible for his suffering.
She wrapped her arms around herself to keep her coverup closed
against the swirling wind coming off the ocean. In the distance, she
saw the speeder, and within it Liam's Force essence pulsed. She had
believed she loved him, but she knew now her heart had deceived her.
He was a friend she cared deeply for, but it wasn't the love of two
beings whose souls belonged as one. Liam only ever shared that with
Yelara, and now she had robbed him of that.
Laedra halted when Liam stepped out of the vehicle, and she very
nearly turned back. She couldn't face him or the blame he would
throw at her, even though she deserved it. "I'm sorry," she
whispered from where she stood. "Forgive me..."
Liam Zaneth walked forward. The hood of his cloak was pulled up over
his head, enshrouding him nearly completely. At first glance, it
appeared black, but as he drew closer, it was clear that the material
was a deep blue. He was the calm in a storm. He reached up and drew
back the hood. "There is no need for forgiveness," he said. "She is
gone, but she won't be forgotten. She helped me to defeat Dargus
Kandran, and so her death was not empty...at least not completely.
She is at peace in the Force, Laedra, I feel it." He opened his arms
to her, a gentle smile caressing his lips. "Laedra..."
She sucked in an unsteady breath and sobbed. "Liam..." she
whispered, then sank into his embrace. Soon, she was weeping against
his chest. "I made so many mistakes," she told him. "I was so
stupid!"
"Laedra," Liam said, his voice gentle yet firm, "let it go. It's
past and it's best to move on. Dwell too long on this and it won't
do anyone any good. I have grieved and I still hurt inside, but I
know she wouldn't want me to. And, I know I don't want you hurting
yourself over this. It's difficult, I know, but we can't linger in
mourning."
"But I lied to you," she whispered. "And I hurt you. If I hadn't
attempted to lure you away from her...things might have been so
different..." Laedra looked up at him, tears streaming back from her
eyes. "Do you blame me for any of it, Liam? I have to know."
"Things might have been different," Liam said. "Dargus Kandran could
now be in charge of this planet. He could have mounted an assault
that would have gotten through the defenses of the Temple. Yelara
wouldn't have been there to keep me alive on his ship, and I would be
dead. Things happened as they did, and to go back and alter
them...who's to say how much it would have changed. For now, we are
alive, Kandran is dead, and the planet is in the hands of those who
will help it become a place of peace and prosperity."
"Like you," she said with a gentle smile. "I wish I could be there
with you.... I do love you, Liam...but I'm not so sure I was ever
in love with you. I-I'm sorry."
"I think it was the same for me," Liam answered. "Yelara was always
the one for me, and...and it was unfair of me to lead you to believe
otherwise. But, I do love you and care for you very much. And...and
I hope this won't be the end for our friendship."
"Never," she told him fervently. "You've shown me so much, Liam; I
could never forget that, or you." She pressed a kiss to his cheek,
and was comforted by the fact that such a touch gave her no yearning
for more. It was one less thing to worry about. "Are you going to
the palace, then?" she asked. "Is that where you will be from now
on?"
"There or the Temple. The Jedi are going to be seeking others with
the potential to be Jedi, so I may be travelling and looking for
others with potential. Where will you be?"
Laedra shrugged as she emitted a heavy sigh. "I'm not sure yet. I
think I'll just go wherever the Force leads me."
Liam smiled. "That doesn't sound like a bad idea," he said. "If you
put your trust in the Force, it won't lead you astray. You'll do
well, Laedra. Just as long as you remember that wherever I am,
you're always welcome."
She embraced him again and felt a calm surround them both. Her soul
was finally at rest from the guilt plaguing it. She was forgiven,
now. "I wish you luck, Liam," she told him. "And...if you're near,
please look out for Koran while I'm gone. I don't wish him to be
alone."
"I'll be around the Temple enough to do so," Liam said with a smile.
"I should get going." He glanced back at the speeder and the young
woman waiting inside. "Shaza's going to look for someone for me,
hopefully that will work out as well. May the Force be with you,
Laedra Vorrel. And, I'll see you soon."
"And may the Force be with you," she replied with a serene smile.
"Be well."
Liam took a step back and smiled. "Say hello to Koran for me, and
try to break that Jedi Master resolve tonight. I know you can do
it."
Laedra chuckled and looked away demurely. "How did you know?"
Liam grinned. "I'm a Jedi, Laedra," he said. "I can sense these
things."
"He's a good man," she assured him. "And he loves me. I just need
to decide what I feel for him."
Liam's grin faded slightly, but there was still an amused twinkle in
his eyes. "I'm sure you'll figure it out. It's not an easy thing to
decide what your heart is telling you. He's a patient man, and
you're right, a good man, and I'm sure the two of you will work this
out to both of your benefit. Stay safe, Laedra."
"You too," she answered. She glanced back towards the speeder, and
smiled knowingly. "Shaza, hm?"
Liam chuckled and glanced back. "Who better to find someone than a
bounty hunter?" With that, he turned and started back toward the
speeder.
Laedra watched him as he drifted further away from her, yet she felt
none of the agony and panic she had once experienced at the thought
of losing Liam. Now, it only came with knowing she would have to part
from Koran soon. As Liam stepped into his speeder, Laedra turned
back and sought out Koran again to finish their last night together.
"He's gone," Laedra called up to him from the base of the rock.
"I sensed him leaving," Koran said as he slid down from the rock.
"And, I sense strength in you. I sense a contentment and sureness
that wasn't there when you went up to meet him."
"That's because he doesn't blame me, Koran. That he would was my
greatest fear." She smiled as she brought a hand up to Koran's
cheek. "Everything's beginning to look so in focus...."
Koran's arms slipped around Laedra's waist. "Focus is very good," he
said. "When you can see what lies before you more clearly, the
future looks much more hopeful."
She studied Koran's smiling eyes, and at once felt more certain of
what her heart had been telling her about him. "I love you," she
whispered, then kissed him softly, but still fully with the passion
she felt for him. The moment was perfect enough that she almost
reconsidered her decision to leave. Almost.
As Koran and Lae held each other on the sands of the coast, the sun
finished its descent, disappearing below the horizon with one final
flash. Domega's Chariot. The flash was a sign of hope, a signal
that Domega would return tomorrow to once again race across the
skies, providing light and hope and freedom for his people.
Freedom. A word that most on Tae'Karada had not hoped to utter again
so soon. But today they had, and not just uttered. They shouted and
screamed, sang and yelled, they gave voice to their freedom in so
many ways that still it could be heard as a buzz around the planet.
Tae'Karada was free from the yoke of Imperial dominion. In one day,
hope had been returned to the Outer Rim.
