"Klaista Volaris? The Colonel's ready for you - go right in."
Klay let out a long sigh as she straightened her civilian attire and
approached the doorway. She hated to do this to Father Celtin, show up
then get called away to some kind of meeting with the local Republic
Official on Chandrila. "I just want one week away from the action and
I get pulled right back in, I though the higher ups said I had a good
amount of time of this time." She shook her head then approached the
door. She pushed her long hair over her shoulder and stood at
attention waiting as she addressed her self. "Specialist Klista
Volairs reporting as ordered sir," she stated.
Colonel Grenwar, a grizzled, stolid-faced man beckoned her forward with a
single finger, and without taking his eyes from the flimsy report he'd been
reading.
She let out a second long sigh then approached him. The whole silent
treatment wasn't winning her over. "Sir I'm sorry to sound like a
nagger here but why exactly was I called here, I was promised at least
two weeks leave and you call me back in two days," she stated.
The older officer leaned back in his chair to assess Klaista with a critical
stare. "You speak as if I don't already know that. Our primary function is
intel - we collect information and if the operation's commanding officer
cannot track the movements of one of his operatives, then we're not doing
our job adequately, are we?"
Klay nodded with him. "Well I'm guessing if you called in one of your
Specialists there has to be a good reason, what's the problem?"
The colonel harrumphed and shifted forward again, folding his hands atop the
desk. "We have a mission for you. Several of our operatives in the
Tae'Remok region have failed to report in...and we need to know why. Scouts
sent into the system have mysteriously gone silent. Some thing's going on,
and we want to know what."
Klay blinked twice before speaking, "Tae'Remok, I've never heard of
that system before where is it located?"
"It's in the Outer Rim." The Colonel activated the holodisplay and a
projected image of the galaxy appeared. One tap and it zoomed in on the
Outer Rim. "In Sector 10. Tae'Remok."
"What," she started. "You're sending me to the Outer Rim again, last time
that happened High Command screwed me over. You guys aren't planning on
doing that to me again are you?" she asked
"Paranoia," the Colonel instructed, "is never a good trait in an
infiltrator. Our duty is to the cause...and if we're required to sacrifice
one individual to achieve the goal, it's a small price to pay. You've been
around long enough to know that."
"Don't remind me of price to pay, I know that phrase too well," she
told him. "I'll go but I'm going to need to know exactly what you want
me to do," she stated. "Can I do a recon over space or do I need to go
planet side," she asked?
"Planet side," he confirmed. "It doesn't look good, though. No contact in
months from any of our New Republic representatives?" The colonel shook his
head.
"Sith Spit," she grumbled. "So do I get the usual package, clothing
that is unmarked and allows me to blend in with the local fashion," she
joked then gave him a little smile. "Never mind sir, I know you have
better things to do. Just when should I prep the Pearl Owl to take to
the starscape?"
"Within the hour. We can't waste anymore time." His hand moved to the side
and lay flat upon the desk. Next, an intel chip was tossed across the gap,
towards Kaly. "Your briefing. I'm sure you'll do just fine." The colonel
didn't smile.
Klay let out a long sigh then gripped the ring around her neck and
looked at the Colonel. "Fine I'll prep my Owl for takeoff," she said,
picking up the chip. "I'm guessing this is the briefing for en route
use."
The Colonel smirked briefly. "You know the routine. We expect to hear from
you once you've reached the Outer Rim. Dismissed."
She nodded then saluted. "Yes Sir," she stated as she left. As she
walked out dozens of scenarios were playing in her head, some of which
were not too pleasant about why they hadn't heard back from their
agents. "If it's Fluties I'm going to so freak out!" she told herself
as she exited the room.
